Looking for some advice about hotel choices south of Atlanta for our trip this year...

We will be traveling I-75 south from NKY/Cincinnati area. Our first time driving to FL. From my best guess so far we will reach Atlanta around 7 p.m. on a Thur. evening. I had at first thought we would just make that our stopping point, but decided that it would be best to just get on through it so we can avoid the Friday morning traffic. I'm assuming rush hour will have quieted down by 7 p.m. Can anyone confirm?

So, with that being said, looks like we are going to need a hotel south of Atlanta. Can anyone recommend somewhere to stay that is close to I-275, and preferably around the $50-$60/night range. We don't need anything fancy, just clean and in a safe location. We'd like to be to our hotel by 9 p.m. so we can get everyone settled in and hopefully asleep by 10 p.m.

Thanks!!

The closest (north) to Atlanta that I would personally stop is Locust Grove, Georgia, exit 212 on I-75, or about 35 miles south of downtown Atlanta. First lodging choice would be Comfort Suites at the exit, but it can approach $90 or more. For a less expensive option, there's a fairly new interior-corridor Red Roof Inn there (in fact the nicest Red Roof Inn I've ever seen; Supposedly, its a prototype for hotel renovations or something).

Whatever you decide, I'd suggest making reservations in advance. Usually its no problem, but the first time you witness car after car driving from one hotel to another in the dark looking for a vacancy and finding nothing anywhere at any price, you'll be thankful you're not among them.

Traffic would "just depend", lol. I used to get on I75 @ Jonesboro Rd (just south of ATL) around 6:15pm & traffic sometimes would be very heavy until you get out of Henry County. Especially closer to the weekend. All those people heading to WDW you know, lol. Assuming you mean I285 close to I75 is pretty much airport area & rates for rooms would be well above $50-$60 range.

I'm not sure where I-275 is, but when we drove to WDW, we wanted a hotel just past Atlanta, off of I-75. We chose the Holiday Inn and Suites in Stockbridge. It was a pretty new hotel and very clean. There was a restaurant on the first floor, so it was convenient to eat breakfast there before we left in the morning. I also noticed a Comfort Suites in Stockbridge.

First off I would avoid using 275 -- we come from Central Illinois (often) and have found it way better to go right through Atlanta staying on 75. We typically keep on going (to Macon) but I have stayed at a Country Inn and Suites with a Chili's next door (convenient for dinner in or take out) that is past Atlanta. There are many choices of hotels - I would pick which brand you prefer and do a route search on their website to see which you prefer.

OP, you must have Cincinnati on your mind. To the rest, I-275 is the expressway that goes around Greater Cincinnati.

I'l second Locust Grove. It's just south of metro-Atlanta, so you won't run into rush hour traffic. Last time we went, we stayed in Locust Grove. However, we paid close to $100 for our room..I think at the Comfort Suites. Nice and comfortable though...four adults and an infant.

Macon is a little over an hour south of there. There's usually good lodging there as well.

What time are you leaving Greater Cincinnati? Remember, if you think you're going to be in Atlanta at 7, that means you'll be in Chattanooga right about a5 (in the midst of their rush hour).

I used to live right down the street from where you are talking about. It is a nice area. I have no clue where I275 is??? But it is surely not in that area but there is 675 on the other side of the Holiday Inn you mentioned.

But you really should use I475 to bypass Macon......it saves some time.

Oh absolutely. That's a given. The bypass is actually a straight shot.

There are a number of good motels off I475. We've stayed off 475 a few times ourselves.

OP here...sorry for the confusion about I-275. Yes, we are from NKY/Cincinnati area and I-275 is the loop that runs through OH/KY/IN. I'm so used to referring to it. :) Sorry for any confusion there.

Thank you for all the suggestions, especially LadyBeBop...I hadn't even considered traffic in Chatanooga.

All good things to think about. We have a few months still. Was just trying to gather some information and recommendations.

I'm leaning toward the Locust Grove area, so we shall see.

Thanks again!! :goodvibes
