Hotel recommendation south of Atlanta (Macon?)

We've always driven straight through on our MI-FL trips. This year we are looking at stopping overnight. Macon looks like it would be about six hours from Daytona Beach which is our initial destination. That seems to be about the distance that we want to finish off with on the second day. Has anyone stayed in Macon? Is it a nice town? We are a family of five, so I think we'd want at least two queens and a sofa bed. Any area of town we should avoid? We are coming down on 75 and take 475 around the west side of town.

Keep in mind that, while 475 is a great bypass of Macon (and I love it), it really does bypass just about everything, including most chain hotels. Most of the chain hotels for Macon are still along 75 itself, so you may want to think about just staying on I-75 into Macon, if Macon is definitely where you wish to stop for the night. If you're not totally set on Macon, we like the Hilton Garden Inn at exit 18 on I-75 in Valdosta. That's quite a bit south of Macon, though.

But if you go into Macon on I-75, they have all the usual hotel chains handy to the interstate. There may be a couple chains on 475, but definitely not the variety you'd find on 75 itself.
