One night at the GCH starts at about $700; divided by 5 or 6 would be $115-$140. Good luck finding that rate even at the Harbor Blvd. motels. But you could do a couple of nights at the JW Marriott or Westin for the cost of one night at the GCH.
One night at GCH is $850-$1050 most of the year. It would require a sale to get that $700 rate, and most sales require 3 or (more commonly) 4+ nights.
Most of the year, for what Disney charges for one night at the GCH, you can get 5 nights at top hotels like Hilton, Marriott, Sheraton - all within a 20 minute walk of Disney, or directly across the street from Toy Stoy parking lot.
There are plenty of solid hotels where you could get 6 nights. Heck, much of the year you could book nearly 7 at the Doubletree Orange. Only a couple miles from DLR and walkable but not a walk many would take. Sadly, they recently discontinued their free shuttle but the ART makes a stop.
Value is in the eye of the beholder.
Not everything has value. Think about fuel service on a rental car. Businesses purchase it because the employees’ time is more valuable. Financially established people purchase it for convenience. But what about the oodles of people who live paycheck-to-paycheck and are always juggling their bills - what value do they get from it? None, they purchase it because they want it.
Same with Disney. There’s a ton of money in SoCal, which is why premium rooms at GCH sell out so quickly. But many people stay there simply because they want it and can’t say no. Same reason glorified motor lodge like the All-Stars goes over $300/night. When we stayed there last fall, our neighbors were celebrating high school graduation and you literally could hear, um, everything. Well late into the night… which is why they pounded on our wall the second our alarm went off.
