We stayed at the Ayres in Orange a few years ago and LOVED it! Back then they had their own shuttle and I think they are on ART now which would be my only concern. The breakfast was large and good, although the same every day. The staff was AMAZING, they have very nice grounds and it's away from the Disney area so we found it was a relaxing break from all Disney all the time. I would call it a high 3.5 stars - very clean, very safe. I wish we were staying there again this trip actually but our family is too big for their rooms now we are staying within walking distance instead but it was my first choice.

Thanks for the review!! Glad to hear you liked it so much. The hotel does have it's own shuttle still, I believe it said there was a charge, and it has an ART stop as well.

like man does this involve cockroaches? Because you know some people actually have those as pets, and wherever they travel they come with them, because they just refuse to stay at home!

Everything I've read from sane people (which means HERE, not trip advisor, where I think most people are a little bit off their rocker especially when it comes to Disney area hotels) about Ayres says it's really very nice.

This is most likely one of the chain hotels near the Convention Center. Which are all nice BUT have paid parking, no breakfast and still most likely won't be within walking.

Convention center area is easy walking distance for a typical person. Might not feel the best at the end of a long day, but it's doable.

I've stayed at both Ayres Orange and Katella. You can't go wrong with either of them. We stayed in May and found the breakfast slightly different each day, eggs and sausage, pancakes and bacon. They have a nice evening reception with wine and beer Mon to Thu.
The grounds and pool area are much nicer at the Orange place. And if you want to do some shopping you're close to the Block at Orange (it has a different name now that I can't remember).

We had a wonderful stay at Howard Johnson's. We requested a park view room and were directly opposite the Matterhorn. Saw the fireworks the night before we used park passes and each night following.

Easy walking distance and some good (but inexpensive) restaurants in the neighborhood.

I would always book in walking distance, to me that is more important than most other things.

I very much dislike riding the bus that stops at several hotels. It is often full, and can not be relied on for having space available when it arrives.
I would rather walk than deal with this bus.
When I stayed at the Marriott (near the Convention center) I did walk.
At the end of the day I wished I had stayed closer.
In the mornings it was a nice walk.

I like a few of the hotels on Harbor Blvd, very few of them. I have stayed in several of them.
Most of them have a dark shut in atmosphere.
I dislike Best Western Park Place, but so many people like it, that it makes me feel like a hotel snob.
