Hotel in NYC 3 nights for $500 total? Doable?

There are 3 adult women, our dates are May 23-26 2013. We are thinking we need 2 rooms, and would like it to be around $500 for each room for the 3 nights? Is this doable? We have never been to NYC, so I'm trying to understand the areas and where to look. Thanks!! Sondra

By NYC, I'm guessing that you're thinking Times Square/Broadway/mid-town? I'm thinking that your budget is a little light for those areas during a holiday weekend.

That's what I thought too. The area we stay in is open as long as we can get to the city fairly easy.

Looking for the last week of August in Midtown I wasn't finding anywhere I was willing to stay for much less than 300 a night so I would say you may want to look in an area a bit further away and commute into the city. You might find better deals than I did as I only really did an evening of searching and decided not to go at this time.

Even hotels in NJ (across the harbor from Manhattan) are going to run more than $167/night. If you want anything decent in a safe area you're either going to have to increase the budget or take your chances with Priceline or Hotwire.

I agree that you are going to have to pay more for a May booking in NYC, especally this close to your trip date, unless you are willing to stay in a less than desirable hotel or far out in NJ.

If you want to stay outside the city for cheaper rates, you are better off in Long Island city in Queens. It just on the other side of the river and is a quick cheap subway ride into Times Square.

You could look at the Verve or Country inn and suites.

Memorial Day weekend is a nice time to visit Manhattan. A lot of locals leave the city for the weekend. Tourists do flock, so I would expect higher hotel rates.

Yes I agree that there will be an extra cost for RR but IMHO she will NEVER find hotel in NYC without breaking the bank and Garden City is nice area and isn't too far. As far as Long Island City have to be VERY careful of which area

My daughter and I just returned. We stayed in Brooklyn (a VERY nice neighborhood) in a B&B. There are quite a few in Mansion Row area and all go for $150.00 per night. Where we stayed we had a king bed, a pullout in the living room area, a kitchen area stocked with breakfast food. A bathroom with washer/dryer.

The subway station was one block from the house and during non-peak times about 20 minutes into the heart of Times Square and around 35 minutes non-peak. $2.50 per trip per person or $30.00 unlimited for 7 days.

It worked out wonderful for us.

I'd look into The Milford. It's being renovated and I think they are supposed to have a grand reopening in June. It has a great location and they have been sending lots of offers. I haven't stayed there so I can't personally vouch for it but I was thinking of trying it.

Try Expedia.com and look at the Parc Central. It is a great hotel and I've stayed there many times all though out there year for 98 a night. If you tried to book it straight through then it is like 300 a night. They are walking distance from Central Park and Times Square with two subway lines close as well.

We're going a day earlier than you all, and I bid $150 on Priceline for a 4* in Midtown East, and got The Roosevelt, a block or so from Grand Central Station. Bad news is I got it on the first bid...should have started lower. With tax and fees, the total came to $740 or so, for 4 nites. Three would be around $550 per room for the three nights. Priceline is your BFF. Historically have gotten the Sheraton near times square. Only prob is that they are normally full. I have never gotten in early.....normally late to be honest. I normally bid around 85$

Thanks soooo much for all the input! It's overwhelming to find a place in NYC. I'm looking at the options now. I also found the Hotel Wolcott. They actually have rooms with 3 beds in it, so instead of 2 rooms at 500 each, it's one room with 3 separate beds for 836.70

We stayed at the Roosevelt this past December...LOVED it, and the location was absolutely wonderful! I would stay there again in New York Minute.

Your price is definitely a little light for that time of year to be very close to anything. I'd say I'd expect those prices more in line with January, unless you want to be out by the airport or something.

I worked for a major hotel chain for a number of years and will give you the best advice I can. WATCH OUT for 3rd party sites. Read all the fine print. And when Expedia (in particular) tells you to check with the hotel for your bed type call the hotel prior to booking. Certain hotels (like Courtyard by Marriott) sell their room types by bed, so once you've booked the room the hotel can't change it due to their contract with the 3rd party site. I'd hate to see you get stuck because you were misled. They even sometimes say they allow more people in the hotel than they actually do, or that the hotel has a pool (not in NYC!) when they don't.

Some places in NYC actually do have pools. They are typically indoors but rooftop pools are also popular. I know for a fact the Downtown Dream Hotel has one it is small but it is a pool. There are also some hotels in NYC (usually posh ones) that will sell NYers pool memberships so they make money just off of people paying to swim during the summer months.
