We are planning our first trip to DLR, just me, DH, and possibly another couple. We've never stayed offsite at WDW, but that doesn't seem to be as big an issue at DL, so I'm looking at the surrounding area and am a bit overwhelmed and, I'll admit, a little frightened. :scared:

While the Grand Californian looks great to me, DH (and my practical side) say that is a no go with a Christmas trip to WDW coming up later in the year. I need something affordable, but nice, near the parks, and maybe at least a little romantic. Am I asking for too much?

If you are going to have a car, there are several nicer hotels in the Garden Grove area. There is a shuttle but I would avoid it at all costs. It is about a 5 minute drive from this area. I would suggest The Marriott Suites, around $150/night and very nice rooms.

If you want to be within walking distance, there isn't much. I've never stayed at The CC Inn, but I have heard good things about it.

Another option, while not romantic, is the Paradise Pier Hotel (usually in the neighborhood of $165). It was renovated a year or so ago. I stayed there for the first time this past December, and it was nice. It wasn't the GCH, but IMO, it is nicer than the DLH (Mostly because of the renovation).

When are you going? You should book early because there isn't much excess hotel space close in like at WDW. Most hotels you can go ahead and book, then if the price drops lock in the lower rate.

It is best to stay at one of the places with in walking distance. The Howard Johnson, Candy Cane Inn (not indicated on the map but it is there and very close) and Best Western Park Place all get mostly great reviews. If you want off site hotels that are larger The Marriot and Hilton get mostly good reviews as well.

Hmmmmm...a little romantic...offsite...affordable...

Okay, I would pick between:
The Anaheim Hilton (great fireworks views from some rooms! and onsite restaurants and bars and room service) or The Candy Cane Inn (has it's own "private" and convenient transportation to/from the parks and has pretty grounds, and some nice suites).

Most of the other hotels/motels on Harbor Blvd are older and just don't have anything about them that are even slightly romantic. They may be clean and decent accomodations for a family or a couple who are only interested in a place to rest their tired heads at night, but they are NOT places to stay at if looking for romance.

If you can find a good rate, I would consider the Paradise Pier for your group. Sometimes a great rate comes out that's close to what you'd pay for a good neighbor hotel like the Hilton or Candy Cane Inn, but if not then the Anaheim Hilton or the Candy Cane Inn would be good choices for you.

Good luck and have a wonderful trip! :flower3:
