We are going to San Diego for the first time. Family includes mom, dad, and two sons(age 4 and 1). Five day trip.

Would the Hotel del Coronado be a good place to stay? Or some where in the gas lamp district maybe?

We are not huge beach people but will spend some time at the pool and a full day at the beach.

Hotel Del Coronado is beautiful, but very expensive. What attractions are you planning on seeing while you're here? Downtown is a much more central location if you're going to the zoo, Sea World, Balboa Park, on a harbor cruise, etc.

If you're not planning on seeing a ton of sights, then maybe the Del will work for you, but it is a little farther out of the way if you think you'll be driving around town. It's on Coronado, which is also home to a few large military bases, so traffic going on to the island is very heavy in the morning and really heavy leaving the island in the afternoon. If you think you'll be spending most of your time in the hotel or on the beach, then maybe that won't be such an issue.

Both the Marriott and the Grand Hyatt by the Convention Center have good pools and are near the Gaslamp area.If you have a car you can drive to the beach for the day. Parking will however add close to $20.00 a day to the hotel bill. There is also a Marriott on Coronado Island

Hyatt Mission Bay just refurbed their rooms and has a great new pool complex with slides etc.

The Del looks beautiful though, I have always wanted to stay there.
