We're heading to DL this fall and are going to spend a few days at San Diego. We have ressies at a Comfort Inn (nice place, my dad has stayed here) for about $100 a night including a free breakfast. My parents will be meeting us in SD and will have their own room, also at the Comfort Inn.

And then I realized the Hotel Del Coronado is a DVC exchange! It'd be 165 points for each room for the 4 nights (cash rate $375 per night) and it's a place we'd NEVER EVER stay at without DVC. But no free breakfast. And a bit farther from the places we want to visit. We have the points to do it, so that's not an issue. My parents would pay us the $400 they would have spent on the Comfort Inn, but otherwise the upgrade would be on our points, on us.

Just wondered if anyone has stayed there, did you think it was worth it, and will us Ohio-rednecks feel out of place at such a fancy hotel? Also, since we're giving up our free breakfast every morning, will there be somewhere to grab a bite without having to eat in the HDC's expensive, fancy restaurants?

TIA!

The Hotel Del is beautiful, has a lot of history, and is right on the beach. The newer wing is more comfortable than the original hotel. When we stayed there it was great if you had time to enjoy the hotel and spend time on the beach or use the amenities (tennis, pool ,etc.). If you'll be spending most of your time away from the hotel, I'd pass this time around.

We only visited, didn't stay at the hotel, but after seeing it, I would pass on staying there for 4 nights if I couldn't be guaranteed to be in the new section.

I had the good fortune of touring this hotel and enjoying lunch there as well last year.

The Hotel is actually the one used by Disney to model the Grand Floridian on. Pay attention to details and you will find the striking similarities. I would highly recommend staying and/or visiting there.

The hotel was also used in the movie 'Some Like It Hot' to stand in for the hotel that was in Miami, FL in the movie.

I have stayed at hotel several times... and I think that it is absolutely grand. OTOH... I cannot imagine spending 165 DVC points per hotel room. At a conservative value of $10/point... that is $1650 worth of points... and I am certain that you could book there for cash much less.

I have not seen a single exchange that I would want using my DVC points. It just seems too expensive.

I disagree with the other posters. I have been in the new wing (directly on the beach), and also in the old hotel. We loved the architecture of the old hotel better. It just seems so much more authentic.

Actually, from what I found, $375 a night is the going rate for the regular room (no ocean view) So 4 nights is close to $1600!

And if you watch the movie closely, in a few outdoor scenes, you can see the 'Florida Mountains' in the background.....

One other piece of trivia, I believe the hotel is the largest, all wood construction, hotel still in existance.

I did a few searches and found rates at $243 and $251. Another site listed $195 but that rate did not come up for any sample dates that I picked. It is possible that you are going in a peak time.

What really surprised me was the mixed ratings. Some people really loved it, and others really slammed it.

In any case... we think it is a lot of fun to stay there. I have only been on business trips and conventions and quite frankly, I cannot remember the exact rates we paid... but I suspect we paid in the $200 range.

If you do go... you could always choose one of the haunted rooms :)

I stayed there at a business conference years ago before they started the major refurbishment and add on the new wing. I can't remember what we paid but it was probably in the $200 range.

We stayed there years ago and absolutely loved it. Even though it is a grand hotel, it isn't stuffy, just sort of romantic and elegant. The beach is amazing and I consider the Del one of our best family vacations ever. The commute to the area attractions wasn't that bad, and coming back to the island was kind of relaxing... like coming home.
