Before I moved to Orlando, I had no idea how many people fall off hotel balconies. It has happened at least a dozen times in the Central Florida area since I've moved here.

Someone fell or committed suicide last night at a hotel near WDW property. In this case, the police have not determined whether or not it was an accident. In most cases, it has turned out that the person was sitting or climbing on the balcony rail. People, please stay off the balcony rails! This is a stupid way to die!

I've been surprised by global accounts of people falling off of hotel balconies. Seems like a lot just this past year. Just recently I read about a couple that fell to their deaths days apart (on vacation). So sad.

It really is very preventable.

Many times alcohol is also involved in the fall. Too bad.

I thought it was kinda funny that your sig pic shows you sitting on a fence rail. Obviously you aren't likely to die if you fall off it, but made me chuckle. :lmao: Good point though. I am always nervous on balconies.

I think Deb & Bill got it right--too much alcohol and the next thing you know
you're an invincible daredevil:sad2: Sorry to hear about the latest incident.

That's actually my daughter in my sig pic. That is kind of amusing. Let's put it this way, I'm not letting her sit on anything higher than a fence rail on flat ground! :goodvibes

In August 2010 we were staying at BC CL - 5th floor. I was on the balcony having my coffee one morning and almost had a heart attack. One of the rooms directly across from a small child climbed on one of the chairs (two women were out there with him but were talking and didn't notice him). He climbed on the chair right at the side rail and was within seconds of going over. Luckily at the last second one of the women grabbed him by his shirt and pulled him back. VERY SCARY!!!!

luckily most balconies are over bushes or heavily mulched flower bed.

bouncing off a palm tree, evergreen bush and rolling through a flower bed is definitely an E-ticket ride. :rotfl:

Just ask Keith Richards. :lmao:

While staying at AKL I also noticed a small child out on the balcony alone  and was pulling a chair up to the rail to better see the animals I guess. Luckily an adult in the room must have head the chair being moved and came out.

Yes, it is an all-to-frequent occurance. We live in a beach community and every year at least one Spring-breaker falls to his/her death from a balcony. As a pp said, alcohol is almost always involved. Very very sad. I've never thought of it happening so much in Orlando, though. Our area, yes, as prime Spring Break territory, but I guess I don't think of drunken rowdiness when I think of Orlando.
