We are coming for the Star Wars race weekend, arriving somewhat late Wed Jan 11 and leaving Mon Jan 16. We are planning on park days on Thurs and Fri, then 2 of us will run Saturday and just me on Sunday. We currently have reservations at a great rate at the Homewood Suites down by Orangewood(not the one by the Toy Story lot).

Problem is my wife is having knee surgery on 1-5. She will have surgery 6 days before departure. The doc states that by day 7 she should be fine, but theme park walking would likely be too much. In addition, she cannot drive for up to 10 days as it is her right knee. We are expecting to rent a wheelchair or scooter for the park days.

Knowing she cannot drive, we still want her to cheer us on during both the 10K and half. ART is an option, but I don't think it can accomodate wheelchairs. We are now looking for a hotel much closer to the parks. The onsite hotels are sold out. The Fairfield Inn looks close and cheap. Any suggestions for a super close hotel that is walkable(or pushable in a wheelchair) would be appreciated.

Our favourite is the Best Western Park Place Inn. It's nothing special but it's a 5 minute walk to the bag check. The crosswalk to the pedestrian entrance is literally right outside the hotel. The Tropicana, Park Vue and the Desert Inn and Suites are really close as well.

Here's an old map of the area. You can see if any of these places will meet your needs.

I'd go with a scooter instead of wheelchair. This will give her freedom to move about on her own easily.

Just a thought- might want to go the scooter route. That way she'll have some independence to move around as she wants without having to stress her healing body to push the wheelchair when y'all are running. There are services that deliver scooters to local hotels. I don't know which ones but others here can help if you decide to go that route.

ART can accommodate wheelchairs. ETA: I think. :). http://rideart.org/faqs/ That has info and further links and a phone number.

And for the race weekend )once you hit the expo) you can pick up free art passes.

I would use a scooter, too. Wheelchairs are hard to push.

Hojo was open last night (at least for our days which are the 11th through 15th) and it's scooterable. Anabella was open too, and you just go up the street to get to the start areas (taking a look at the maps they've flipped the start again to go towards katella).

Outside scooter rentals are much better than renting in the park. They are cheaper, and you can have them deliver it to your hotel. Deckert's is highly recommended. If she has a scooter, any of the Harbor hotels should work.

ART can also get very crowded which could be difficult in a wheelchair. I would choose the Fairfield any day of the week over an ART option, wheelchair or not.

Sure, but given the timeframe (and the fact that I was literally reserving a hotel for a little shorter than his timeframe last night and know the relative availability), the rooms available are diminishing the longer this decision takes.

And since he stated something that wasn't totally true, it needed to be pointed out, IMO. :)

A scooter rental was my first thought. Even coming from Orangewood she'll probably beat the time waiting for and riding ART.

Wow!! Thanks for the responses already.
Looks like the scooter idea wins.
The Fairfield is available and has a decent package rate that comes out to around $120 a night. That's slightly higher than we have down Harbour but the convenience given the circumstances seem to be worth it.

ART seemed reliable during the marathon times, but we had long waits during the later afternoon hours to return to the parks. To just have a 5-10 minute walk/scooter ride across the street seems much easier to me.

We're staying at the Hojo again for Star Wars weekend which is just a couple down from Fairfield. Walking for a normal person is under 10 minutes to the parks. One year when we stayed there for summer vacation, two members of our party were dealing with injuries so we rented scooters. The hotel recommended a company and we called them and they arranged it all for us. They were delivered to the hotel and picked up there when we left. So thats something you might want to look into.
