I have some beef franks in the freezer that I'd like to use up. I can certainly grill them, boil them, etc. But I'm curious if anyone has a good recipe for something a little different that uses hot dogs. Maybe even something in a crock pot?

What do you do with hot dogs that's a little different?

Slice and fry the hot dogs with sliced onions and par boiled chopped potatoes until potatoes and hot dogs are cooked through and lightly browned. Add above ingredients and beaten eggs with your favorite shredded chesse into an omelette pan --for a wonderful and cheap omelette. Serve with fresh cut up fruit and toasted muffins, toast , etc.

That sounds wonderful! I never would have thought about using hot dogs in an omelette. I think I'll have to try it. Thanks for the idea! :thumbsup2

Anyone else?

This is a family recipe that was handed down from my dear grandmother who had to cook on a VERY LOW budget because she had 5 children to raise on 1 very low income.
Enjoy!!

I'm not a big hot dog fan, but I always like them in beans. My mom used to slice them up and but them in pancakes. I know it sounds kind of weird, but it's actually pretty good.

Believe it or not, when we visited a pizza place in Naples, Italy one of the topping choices was hot dogs! Someone in our tour group ordered this... the hot dogs were just sliced up, maybe 1/4" thick. Strange to me, but he said it was good. :confused3

Weinee gravy~ it is seriously good. When I was a kid my teenage aunt would make it for me. Cut up weenies and fry in some oil. Remove weenies. Add flour to make rue (sp?) and pepper. Don't add salt. Add milk and cut on low and thicken. Add back in weenies. Serve with scrambled eggs and canned biscuits or toast.

As as child my mother used to put baked beans in a pan (9x9), slice hotdogs and lay over the beans and pour BBQ sauce on top cover in foil and bake it in the oven.

I usually flatten a refrigerated biscuit and a half a slice of cheese, roll them up and bake. My kids love them!! Nothing fancy but they are good!

Wrap each one in a crescent roll and bake. Or cut hot dogs and crescents in halves or thirds and make little ones, and serve with ketchup, honey mustard, etc. for dipping...always a kit with my kids.

I was going to suggest this! I just went to Venice in July and they also had "frankfurters" as a pizza topping, paired along with sausage. DBf ordered it and it actually tasted good! Believe it or not this was one of the more "normal" sounding toppings, they sure had some other interesting toppings choices. It's worth a try.

My dh makes Bacon chili cheese dogs with ours. Boil hotdogs, wrap bacon and pin with half a toothpick on each end. Fry until bacon is done. Throw in to hotdog buns add chili and cheese. Yummy!!! It's the only way my family will eat hotdogs!

We love Chili Corn Dog Pie. I actually make this for picnics rather than the normal hotdogs and their toppings.

2 cans of Chili (with or without beans, your choice)
6 - 8 hotdogs, cut up
1 cup self-rising corn meal mix
1/2 cup milk
1 egg
2 tbsp vegetable oil
1 cup shredded cheese

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Pour chili into an 11 x 7 glass or ceramic baking dish (I actually use a stone pan or a glass pie plate) Arrange hot dog slices on top.

Whisk together the cornmeal mix, milk egg, and oil in a small bowl and pour evenly over the hot dogs. Sprinkle the cheese on top.

Bake until the cornmeal topping is lightly browned and firm, and the chili bubbles around the edges, about 25 to 30 minutes. Let cool for 5 minutes before spooning onto plates.

Chili dog pizza

Top a pizza crust/flatbread with chili. Add sliced hot dogs and chopped onions. After cooking, you can add whatever condiments you prefer. It sounds weird but tastes really good.

Not weird to me - several local pizzarias here have hotdog pizza. However, many people working at them speak in very heavy Italian accents.

I also roll hotdogs up in cheap biscuits and bake, so yummy :)

Also you can wrap back around them, slice them up, then put them in a crockpot, dump 1 box of brown sugar on top and put in crockpot on low for a few hours! These sound simple but taste oh so good!

I also have this thing I make, my dad said they made it when he was stationed in Okinawa, never had an exact recipe, but you boil some macaroni, add hotdog slices and onions you sauted, then add ketchup, worshestire sauce and hot sauce to your likeing/consitancy....sounds strange, and really doesn't look that good, but it is very addicting....

OP here. How great to check back here and find more good ideas for hot dogs! It will be hard to pick which one to try first.

Thanks again, everyone. :)

Well, this would be sort of a hot dog "topping". But everyone I have made it for loves it. My dh's co workers call me and ask me to make this and send it in...lol. I don't cook with exact measuremets, so bear with me. We call it...

Junk Yard Dog

a pound -1 1/2 pounds browned ground beef
a large diced onion ( I cook it with the ground beef)
I large can (24 oz?) of saurkraut with about half the juice
2-3 cans of hot dog chili ( no beans)

I usually open my hot dog bun flat and cut my hotdog in half longways and pur mayo and what ever you like on your hotdog. Put this on the top and eat it with a fork. It's amazing.
