Hose Water

Okay, I think I may have asked this before, but I wasn't able to find that thread....

What is all this talk about hose water?? I've read people call it black, Grey, and possibly some other things.

Can someone please let me know?! It has me a bit nervous. I've never known there were 2 different types before!

In RV's the grey and black water are waste water, grey being from sinks and showers and black being from the toilet. Typically they are contained in seperate tanks. My trailer has 2 grey tanks (one for the kitchen sink and one for the bathroom sink and shower drain) as well as a black tank for the toilet.

When dumping tanks I start by emptying the black then close the valve and empty each of the grey tanks.

Be sure to bring your own hose. The hose that's provided may have previously touched some of that black water BDD told you about.

Now I've noticed that there is another faucet at the sites, besides the one w/ the black hose. Is this the same water, or different??

Totally agree. Never use the hose provided at the site for anything other than cleanup. I always run the spigot for a few seconds and spray the spigot, my camper's inlet, and the hose ends with bleach before making my connections. Last thing I want on vacation is a stomach bug.

It never hurts to connect a filter between the spigot and the hose going to the camper!

okay...let it be known that we do not have a camper or pup. We are 'tenters'!

So...with that being said...should i still be taking all these precautions?? How do they get that black hose in their black water?? I don't understand. Remember...you are talking to someone that is totally clueless to the hose situation.

Sorry but if it makes you feel any better the lead that is used to make garden hoses is probably worse for you then the black water waste. That why you buy the white hoses for drinking no lead.

Go to Walmart and buy a white, potable drinking water hose. They are in the camping section back by the auto parts/tire section (typically). Not expensive, like maybe $6-10. You might also want to buy an inline water filter as suggested above. Those are also in the camping section, and look like a cylindar with hose threads at each end. Hook the filter up to the extra spigot at the site, and the white hose up to that. That way you will have fresh, filtered water for dishes and such. If you can, I'd still either bring gallons of drinking water for drinking, or some kind of filtering system like Brita as Shan mentioned to better filter the water for consumption.

As stated, the hose at the site is just for general cleanup around the site...and I don't even touch it at all. I have no idea what people have used them for, and just the possibility that some dope contaminated it with his black water is enough for me to leave it alone.

Don't fret! Just do as Dave suggests and get a white potable water hose at Wal-Mart. The hoses that are on the site are there for the CM's to hose down the sites after you leave. People also use them (although they shouldn't) for other purposes. If you will be using the tap water for drinking water at your site - it's safe. Like drinking water in every community, it may taste different from what you're used to at home, but it's safe to drink. If you're in a tent & don't have anything to hook the hose up to - i.e. sink, toilet, shower...then don't bother with the hose & just use the water from the spigot. It's okay!

I use a pressure regulator off the spigot first, then a "Y" for hose leading to RV and a second hose for whatever else.

For the sake of accuracy, I wanted to add that I have never seen a black hose at any FW campsite. The hose provided at the site is a common, green, garden hose. They cut the tip off of the hose so no one hooks it up to his camper. There is a sign on the stand that holds the hose stating that it is for emergency use (i.e. in case of fire), and must not be removed. There is then a second, empty hose bib for the camper to hook his own hose up to.

I use a water diverter connector that I bought at Camping World to connect my hose to my camper. This gives me an outside spigot that I can use.

But, I have used the green hose for things like washing dishes. And I have seen people use the hose for filling up cooking pots! Especially on the tent loops.

After this discussion, I think I will get a "Y" fitting, like John VN suggested, and hook up a second white hose to that. I will then use that for things around the campsite instead of the potentially contaminated green hose.

Agree, we always spray the hose connection with bleach water. Actually spray our hose connections also since they've been stored a little while. Need to get rid of any nasties.

Bleach and water solution is only good for about 24 hours. If you mixing it at home before you leave or leaving it in you RV all the time, it is useless to kill anything. You would be better off using a commercial product in a aerosol can.
