I am thinking about arranging an afternoon of horseback riding and would like a little more info than I found on the WDW website.

What is the cost?
Where do we go? Is this at the campground?
Are there any clothing requirements, jeans, boots etc?

Any other info you you think I may need.
Thank you

I assume they'd tell you to wear long pants. If they don't, I will: You'd be a dope to wear shorts on a horse. Ouchies. Wear jeans.

I see no reason they'd require boots.

It is at Fort Wilderness. You don't get to ride freely. You walk along.

I don't remember what they charge.

•No open-toed shoes, flip-flops or strapless shoes should be worn for riding
The Tri-Circle-D Ranch, located at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground, is home to Disney's world-famous Percheron hitch. The Ranch offers a variety of recreational activities for the entire family.
Trail Rides - 45-60 minute guided trail rides through a wooded portion of the resort. Riders must be at least 9 years old and at least 48 inches in height. Rider weight limit is 250 pounds. Rider cost is $42 and reservations may be made up to 90 days in advance by calling 407-WDW-PLAY

Sounds fun, anyone know what times/days this is offered?

Horseback riding at the Triple D ranch has become a family tradition at Christmas for us. We've gone the last four years. CM Gayle has always been our guide. She's awesome. My son loves Domino and she had made sure he always gets his favorite horse. The trail ride is 45 minutes and goes through wooded areas of the campgrounds. We have been lucky enough to see several deer on each trip. The cost is $48 but there is a DVC discount if you're members. Wear jeans and sneakers. You can sign a waiver to not wear a helmet, but why take that risk. There is free storage and they do not encourage that you bring phones or cameras with you. If you are an experienced rider, you'll be bored. Nothing above a slow walk. The entire experience lasts one hour. If you have a car with you it is easiest just to drive straight to the campgrounds. There is no fee for parking.

Thanks for the DVC discount tip! This is one of the main things daughter wants to do when we go in Sept. She turns 9 in April so she has been waiting to do this one. :)

Thinking about doing this with my DD as well. It looks like we'll be there the same time!!!

being 9 years old to ride...is that a requirement or suggestion?..because if the rules say 9, then i guess we wont stay here..DD wants to ride but is only 7...(and riding horses for 4 years)

I believe it is a strict 9 for insurance reasons.

It is 9 y/o and they are very strict about it. My grand daughter was an experienced rider, (been riding since she was barely a toddler). She has her own horse and has since she was 3 y/o. They said due to insurance purposes she couldn't ride. She was 8 y/o. I took her back when she was 9 y/o. She was bored stiff.:rotfl: She told the CM she was an experienced rider and asked for a frisky horse. The one she got, walked at a very slow plodding walk and it was just a very slow trail ride where you ride nose to tail with the other horses. After the ride, she looked at me and said, 'well that was a waste of time and soooo boring'.:rotfl: I hadn't ridden a horse in years though and personally enjoyed it.:rotfl:

If you CAN ride, I wouldn't reccomend the Disney riding, you go no faster than walk. Which is a bit boring!

I would reccomend Horse World riding stables out in
Poinciana/Kissimme as they offer different levels of trail ride, from walking trails all the way up to fast trails with cantering (I have been riding for 20 years and went on an advanced trail ride this September and found it pretty easy going - but the idea with their trail rides is to relax!)

Very well enforced rule...not a guideline or suggestion.

It will be boring if you've ridden before. We did it the year my dd turned 9. It was August. She hadn't ridden before (other than pony rides) and dh hadn't ridden before. I rode as a teen, so at least knew how to mount a horse!!!
We were the last ones there...got on the wrong bus. So, we were at the end of the line. Dd was behind me, dh last in the line. Dd was pretty nervous but one of the guides stuck to her and joked around...he was wonderful. The horses do pretty much plod along..nose to tail. But...as the clouds gathered overhead, I asked the guide what happened if a thunderstorm cropped up...you know, did the horses get all nutty?? He told me that they had checked radar before leaving the stables, all was fine. But even if a storm did come along the horses didn't really mind..they were used to it. Although, one or two of the horses weren't thrilled with being wet. And of course, mine was one of them.
So...about half way through the ride, the skies opened up. The guides got on their radios and found that a storm cell had just formed, right over us. There was thunder in the distance!!! The guides made the decision to go back the way we had come rather than going forward. Only problem was they had a group of people who had no idea how to turn their horses around!!! It was really funny (at least for me) to see people tryng to get their horses to turn and go back!!! Those around me were lucky since I had no such issues...which the guides realized. They went off to the front of the line to get the horses up front turned.....those around me turned when my horse turned. My poor dd???? Horrified!!!! She was sure her horse was going to take off on her.
By the time we got back to the stables, we were soaked to the bone. My underwear was even soaked!!!! Some guests just got off their horses and returned to their cars. The guides told us that we should head to the stable office where they had towels for us to dry off. It was there that we found that they were refunding our money....100%!!! Even though we had had a longer ride than normal. It was actually one of our best WDW memories!!!
They really took care of the guests, from start to finish. It was very impressive.

I think I'm going to take DMom to do this for her birthday in January. She loves horses! We aren't "experienced" riders but we've been on probably at least 5-10 trail rides before.

Just to clairify: you only walk. There's no trotting?

Thanks! :)
