Horrible Halloween Candy

I like all of those, haha. Had a Dum Dum yesterday from the bank. Love Mary Janes - they have a tiny bit of peanut butter in the middle. And Necco Wafers are made near me. I wouldn't give any of these out, mind you, but I might bring them into work or buy them in a penny candy store. For Halloween I bought the full size Reese's Cups, Hershey and Kit Kat bars. (And hid them.)

Interesting history: http://www.necco.com/Candy/Wafers/History.aspx

in the 1930's Admiral Byrd included 2½ tons of NECCO® Wafers in his supply list for a two year stay in the Antarctic. Then, during WWII, the U.S. Government requisitioned a major portion of production for American soldiers serving in WWII, as the wafers didn’t melt and rarely broke during transport.
What is this magical elixir? We don't have it here; can you describe it? Also curious about these Mary Janes that are being mentioned.

I totally LOVE candy corn - the waxier the better and molasses kisses too! Those were probably the least welcome thing in most kids' bags when I was a kid. :crazy2: We all hated them. Not even sure what got me started on them as an adult but OMG, now the only thing I actually like about Halloween is the blessed advent of those molasses kisses. :hyper:

Ok. Necco Wafers aren't a liquid, they're hard little round wafer candies that are, like, pure sugar, practically. They do have flavors but the flavors are mild. (See below.) They melt in your mouth (unless you chew them) and that's when you get a lot of flavor. Not bad.

Necco also makes the Valentine's conversation candy hearts, so the taste is similar to those if you know what those are.

The wintergreen (pink) ones can sometimes be found in a thicker version. Those are pretty flavorful and softer than the wafers. And ironically enough, called Canada Mints.

.

As for Mary Janes - I sometimes put them in the same category as BitOHoney, but I think I like the Mary Janes a little bit better, probably because my mother loved them and introduced me to them. (Yes, a lot of these candies we're talking about were around even in the 1930s or before!) Just figured out these are made in Boston, too :) (now by the Necco factory), that explains a lot. Basically a local candy. Anyway, they are molasses flavor taffy with a little bit of peanut butter on the inside. You have to watch your fillings, but they're so good.

Another interesting history: http://mentalfloss.com/article/70505/revolutionary-story-behind-mary-jane-candies

I think there are a lot of places you can buy some of these candies that would ship to Canada.

As long as they are just the chocolate Necco's, I am good with it. Those are actually one of my favorite candies. I agree with you on candy corn and Mary Jane's though, lol

Tootsie rolls
My mother always had a small bowl of the mini-Tootsie rolls at her house. They are a good memory for me.

When I was trick or treating as a child, people used to make up little bags of assorted treats. And my loot would includes some coins and some apples too. (I am ancient.)

I used to love the little bags of Planters peanuts and other savory treats we'd get at one particular house. A nice break from all the sweet.

Tootsie Rolls - gross. Chocolate flavored wax is not my thing!

Whoppers - malted-flavored stale cork. Why bother?

Palmers chocolate anything - mostly tastes waxy like tootsie rolls and is way oversugared

Three Musketeers - chocolate flavored marshmallow fluff. Eww

You might think I hate chocolate by this list, but I don't. I just hate disgusting chocolate-flavored candy! Give me a Lindt Lindor Truffle or Godiva chocolate anyday and I will be all over it! Or even a hershey's nugget Dove bar or whatever they are. Just not anything that has fake chocolate flavoring as a main ingredient! Yuck!

Raisinets
Mary Janes
Those peanut butter kisses in black and orange wax wraps
Black Licorice
Chik-o-Stix
Bun candy
Palmer candy (fake chocolate)
Milk Duds
Bit O Honey
Oh Henry
Clark Bar
Good N Plenty
Black Jelly Beans
Dots
Candy Buttons
Mallow Cups
Peanut Chews
Wax lips
Hot Tamales
Laffy Taffy

When I was a child I thought the worst candies were:
-Necco Wafers
-Bit o Honey
-the Orange and black wrapped mystery candy
-Reisins
-wax lips (what was the point. package said you could eat it, but ewww)
-bubble gum (always rock solid)
-jaw breakers

I like all those candies.

I'd have been happy to get them (well not the black necco wafers cause I don't love licorice).

I'll take your black Necco wafers because they're my favorite. I'll give you all of my clove and lime ones and half of my chocolate (cocoa?) ones in trade.

I hate Smarties.

So, there is no accounting for taste.

But does anyone hate Reese's cups? We didn't buy them to give out because of the peanut butter though.

My younger son doesn't like Reese's cups, and my daughter doesn't really like them too much (but she likes the holiday-shaped Reese's...) So, my husband and I got most of those. :) And we also got all of my younger son's Almond Joy and Mounds bars. I miss the kids being young enough to trick-or-treat. ;)

For those who don't like Reese Cups, Candy Corn, Whoppers, Circus Peanuts, I will make the sacrifice and take them off your hands, lol.

-wax lips (what was the point. package said you could eat it, but ewww)

Idk, my friends and I really liked the wax lips, fangs, mustaches, etc. I don't think you were supposed to eat it, just chew it like gum and then spit it out when the sweetness was gone. The best were the wax orange harmonicas--anyone remember them?

lol, sour patch kids are the best candies ever.

WORST
circus-peanuts.jpg

I was thinking, all candy is good candy, until I was reminded of these! BLEH...I remember my mom always bought these and I swear she bought them because she knew no one else would take them from her lol

I like candy corn.

I bought crap candy to give out (dum dum lolipops, cow tails, and bubblegum). One reason is because we eat the good candy if I buy it (DH especially and then I run out). And another reason is that my kids are all off to college and I am not all that into Halloween right now and don't want to encourage kids to love Trick or Treating at my house. Another reason is that when I used to give out good stuff I would have to count, something like, three pieces out per kid. Now with little crap candy I will just reach in bowl and give a small handful.

Oh, and my mom gives out little packs of pretzels every year. Boo!

I'm sure this thread comes up every year, but I'm starting it again.

Anybody who gives these out as treats deserves to get their house egged.

And the absolute worst, Mary Janes

What say you?

MMMMMM I love all these candies!!! Bring them to my house please!

I actually don't think there is a candy I don't like... even Dropke! Yes even salty minty licorice is delicious!!!!

Cute story. When I took DS trick or treating when he was almost two, we went up to one house that had a tray with yummy chocolate candy and little boxes of raisins and they held out the tray to DS and told him to pick one. He picked the raisins.

I was going to say I love them all, but then I realized I hate black licorice. Luckily, I don't see that very often so that's probably why I forgot.

I love the Mary Janes (never knew they even had a name lol!) and most of the flavors of Tootsie Rolls (especially vanilla and orange). I used to hate getting Smarties, but those are one of my favorites now.

We had a little neighbor lady who would always give out dimes. Usually a few to each kid. I thought she was cheap, but then I realized how much money she was actually probably giving out throughout the night. It would've been cheaper to buy candy. PS - this was many years ago, so candy was cheaper.
