This is what happened to me at a Hallmark store the other night, and I wanted to post it in order to show you why I (and others) get upset to hear such hateful things being said about the French people. It is one thing to be upset with the government, but saying derrogatory things about the people of France is another.

Anyhow, I stopped at the mall on my way home from work. I went to the Hallmark store asked for something my mother had on hold for me at Halmark under her name. I gave my Mother's name to the sales clerk, who also asked me to spell it for her because my maiden name is hard name to spell/pronounce.

The woman behind me in line poked me and said "Chretien like the prime minister?".
I said yes - he's a very distant relation.

She looked at me and said "honey. I feel bad for you. Not only do you have to be ashamed of being French, you have to be ashamed of being Canadian"

I was flabbergasted. How would she like it if I told her she should be ashamed for being whatever nationality she was. I am proud of my heritage. All parts of it.

And so I said the only thing I need to be ashamed of is living in the same country as bigots like you.

I can't believe that someone would have the gall to be that rude to you. I am so sorry that you had an experience like that.

Unbelievable.

I think your retort was perfect.

And you can see where I'm from!
Some people just haven't had a nice day until they've tried to spoil someone else's!
Consider the source on that one....

Jen you handled yourself well. I wouldn't of been so nice, I'm starting to just hate dealing with stupid people.

unfortunately, this is not an isolated case :(
There are a lot of people who seem to think that any French person should be embarassed to be French. :(

You handled it better than I would have. I would have been so taken off guard that I would have been left standing there with my mouth hanging open. Later that evening I would have thought of a come-back! Sorry to hear about your experience.

I think this person was very rude and you made a very good reply. However, the french people need to let their government know that not supporting the USA is unacceptable. After all, who liberated Paris in WWII?

And so I said the only thing I need to be ashamed of is living in the same country as bigots like you.
Great comeback! I hope it made her squirm! Did she appologize?

That was a great comeback!

Unfortunately, there are idiots of every nationality!

As angry as I am at the French government right now, I can't imagine taking it out on an individual person.

What she said was totallly uncalled for and very, very rude. I am sorry you had to experience something like that.
:(

This is so sad but so typical. I remember when we were fighting with Iran my newspaper guy was so embarassed to tell me he was from Tehran. I felt sorry for him.

Americans have a tendency to have an "enemy" of the day. Whoever it may be gets the brunt of the most ignorant of us.

It's been the Japanese, the Germans, the Vietnamese, the Koreans, muslims of all kinds, now the French... Hey, remember when we fought the English???? How about the North and the South?

Who next?

I'm sorry that happened to you, Jenz. :(

If it were me, I'd be finding someone at the top to tell that to. Completely and utterly unacceptable that she said that to you. :(

I'm sure you will not be frequenting that Hallmark store again. I know I would expect an apology and some sort of discipinary measures taken against that clerk before I returned.

{{{{[hugs}}}}}

I'm sorry that happened to you, but I have to say I love your comeback. :)
