Hoping to visit FW this summer

I am looking for any info on travelling to the Fort from West Texas (i.e. Midland). Suggestions on best route to take, where to stop, etc. I am planning on taking several days so as not to drive too long each day. Trying to convince husband it won't be that bad, any help would be appreciated.

hello, we are from lubbock. We will be leaving for the fort June 19th. We are giving ourselves 2 1/2 days for driving. We take I20 to Dallas/Fort Worth. Stay on I20 and it will take you the southern route around. (less traffic) Stay on I20 to Shreveport take I49 south to Lafayette go east on I10 all the way to Florida. Exit 296 south on I75. I hope this will help you out. In 2006 was our First trip and we LOVED IT!!!! We had a 5th wheel at the time. This trip we have a MH. If you can go...I suggest Going!!! You will have a blast!!

We are from Longview, TX. This will be our second time to go to FW this summer. We are breaking up the drive leaving the 19th and arriving the 21st. We travel I-20 to Meridian, MS (one night at a KOA) then we travel on 80 until Montgomery, AL then 82/231 southeast toward Dothan. From Dothan we stay on 231 until we get to I-10 in FL. We travel I-10 east until we get to 75 south (staying in Lake City even though it's only 3 + or - hours away mainly to stock up on groceries etc.) We took this route before but only broke it into one overnight stay We made it to Ozark, AL about 10.5 hours. That was six years ago with a smaller fifth wheel. We were exhausted when we got there. Now we have a 37ft fifth wheel plus we are taking a guest with us so we decided not to push it. We are staying a week at FW then taking out time getting back home. Staying in Destin, FL three nights. May not want to now because of the oil spill. My husband says if you stay on I-20 and you don't go during rush hour that would be the best way to go around Dallas/Ft Worth. Then the next major city is Shreveport. It's a little tight on some of the spots there but not too bad. I know of some that go to Houston and take I-10 all the way to FL. You have to go through the "ship" channel tunnel in Mobile. To us, that way is out of the way and we are much closer to Houston than you are. We've been down throught MS too to Disney too but we were on a charter bus. We went to Jackson and then south toward Hattiesburg. We've been the LA route to go to Gulf Shores. We just don't like to go that way but some do. I hope you find this helpful!

When I go to Disney from Mobile, I take I-10 to just east of Tallahassee and turn south at exit 225 onto US 19 which intersects about 5 miles at US 27. Follow US19/27/ALT 27to Ocala, where you can get on I-75. The "US" roads are limited access and much like interstate for most of the way and cuts off a ton of miles vs going on I-10 to I-75. From Ocala follow I-75 to the Fla Turnpike to exit 267A onto US 429 south. Continue on 429 to exit 8 which will be Western Way, which will lead you to W. Buena Vista. Take a left onto WBV and another left onto World Drive and continue to the MK parking gates, where you will turn right toward FT Wilderness. It's not as complicated as it sounds...check mapquest or similar.

What are the advantages of staying at the Fort versus just one of the other disney resort hotels? I am trying to justify all the drive versus flying and staying in one of the Disney resorts. How do you get to the parks from FW, is it pretty easy? Is there access to any golf courses?

I've never stayed at another resort. We take advantage of Disney transportation-ferry, buses, monorail to get to the parks. We have a 1 ton and we found it was better to park it at the campsite during our stay and ride on Disney's dime. My sister has flown and stayed at Port Orleans Riverside and one other resort. She doesn't camp or cook. They got a dining plan. Somebody put pencil to paper and compared the cost on here not too long ago. I love to camp so that's the way we've been doing vacations since getting our first fifth wheel in 2002. My son doesn't like to fly and neither does my husband. Good luck with your planning!!!!

We've never stayed at another resort either, but can't imagine any advantage to doing so, except maybe someone to make up you beds (that who knows who has slept in). We have our own bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, grill, lawn chairs, golf cart, bus and boat service, free shows, freedom to wander (loop), etc. What do you get in any other resort? Oh, there may be some minor economic advantage at times, but when we're on vacation, we're spending discretionary money anyway, so why not get the maximum enjoyment out of it? Try it, you'll like it.

I can't help you with any directions, but I just wanted to say to be prepared to become addicted! The Fort is AWESOME!!
