Two weeks ago my sister came home to find her house had been broken into. They stole both her and my BILs laptops, some jewelry (mainly it had sentimental value - it was from my grandmother who had passed away), and some checks they found to an account my sister and BIL had. They also trashed the place. They were able to go to 3 different banks and use fraudulent IDs to cash the checks which they made out to themselves and signed them from my sister. They managed to overdraw the account by $700 - and my sister had some pending transactions which were all overdrawn and they wracked up $200 worth of fees. Thankfully the bank is reimbursing them everything.
Today my sister sent me a news article... apparently some cop noticed a car parked strangely in a driveway. He watched it - and ran the plates which did not match the vehicle. Car was pulled over - turned out my BILs laptop was in the car... as well as a LOT of other items from a LOT of other people, including the fake IDs used to cash the checks. And they were able to match the people to the bank security tapes of when they cashed the checks. Thank goodness for that cop who noticed something was off.
It was a 20-something man and woman - just the 2 of them going around and breaking into homes. Sadly, my sister's laptop (with all her pics - so as a PSA, make sure to back things up) and the jewelry have not been recovered. She is checking pawn shops and the police are keeping her informed. My BIL is graduating from law school soon so he was happy to get his laptop back with his law school stuff on it.
Just makes me sick - I am happy they were caught, but I hope they get more then just a slap on the wrist (we'll see what happens).
