We just recently found out that DBF has a hernia that needs to be operated on. It's in his abdomen, somewhere near umbilical, but in-between that and another, I can't remember the name.

He's scheduled for surgery December 17 and we are scheduled to leave for Florida for 2 weeks on January 18. I understand recovery takes a while, and I'm wondering how much this will impact our ability to do certain rides, not to mention I think I need to plan on how we are going to transport luggage. (skycaps and so-forth that we don't usually use, since we are able bodied people who usually don't mind doing it ourselves). He's 54, in pretty good shape, so I'm hoping that will work for him.

I'm going to have to talk to his doctor about it....in the meantime is anyone familiar with this procedure? Can you give me any hints on what to expect?

Thanks!

I haven't had any personal experience with this, but I do wish your DBF all the best with the surgery and the recovery!

I am sure there are differences in procedures and recovery times, but I know my Brother was at home for 6 weeks after his.

No advice....just hoping the procedure goes well and that you'll enjoy your trip....:D

I think it all depends on the hernia. Definitley talk to the doctor.
DH had an operation for his last year. Operation on Thurday. Back to work on Monday. Had to take it easy and no lifting but other than that he was fine.

Now....I have TOO much experience with hernia repair. Let's see....I think the count is up to 6!!
Out patient surgery. Day 2 is the worse. But I was cleaning house in a few days....again no heavy lifting.

I think I had one of the surgeries about a month before a trip also. I did everything I always do (but I don't do coasters anyway). You will definitley have to have someone carry the luggage for you.

DH(39) had inguinal hernia repair with the traditional incision, plug and mesh on a Wed. That night -Fri was the worst. He was up and about on Sunday and part time back to work Monday. Full time by the next week, and walking around the neighborhood at the one week mark. His job is not physical though. No restrictions on lifting or running by the 6 week mark.
