If we do HDD, are fried chicken and ribs seriously the only 2 options? I mean, I like baked beans and mashed potatoes as much as the next person, but since I don't like fried chicken or ribs, that'd be my (full-o-starch) meal. Do they ever offer anything else?

1) You can request special dietary options.
2) But, do not expect much.

Does that go for kids' food as well? I can't say that mine would eat fried chicken or ribs, either. (I know, we're weird.) Do they still offer the stand-bys of mac-n-cheese, etc. for kids, just in case?

I know that if requested, they can prepare you food from Trials End. So, if there is that need, Disney can accommodate you. I think that is how the kids food if they don't eat chicken or ribs or whatever, and i would guess they could do the same for adults

I like baked beans, but the beans at HDDR, were cowboy beans and I didn't like them, and I am not a picky eater. I liked everything else, good food, not great. But the show was great.

I had a picky teenager with me on our last Hoop De Doo adventure. She wouldnt eat the "home cooking" So I paid $50 + for her to have a hot dog and fries. *she was a last minute guest and I didnt inquire of her dining preferences prior to making reservations so ... my bad* But.... it sure hurt to know that I paid premium for a hot dog..... So yes, they will accomodate you but the choices are limited.

I don't think the choices are as limited as you think. We have never had a problem with requesting items to accomodate a picky eater. That being said...your still going to pay the exact same price as everyone else regardless. Which we have done numerous times. It isn't WDW's problem if you choose not to eat what is on their menu....but if they are willing to subsitute for you...then you need to be alright with paying what is the set price...especially if it is a dinner show such as HDDR. Not saying I totally agree with it....but they do offer options.

So would they be able to find an entree-type item (i.e. to take the place of the fried chicken/ribs) for say, a vegetarian? I wouldn't just want more beans and mashed potatoes, for example. I really would like to go for the show! (But don't want to pay the price if I'll be eating just beans and potatoes.)

I think for vegetarian meals there are more options and those can be arranged ahead of time.

For my situation, I didnt know that my teen diner wouldnt eat the food offered at HDDR . I was fully aware that I would be paying the same price regardless of what she ate and I am actually ok with it from a Disney perspective but when I thought about in reality that I paid $50 for a hot dog - I had to swallow really hard - oh, well- the show is really fun! We have been two years in a row and will probably go back each time we visit - we like it that much.
