Honoring Great Americans: Burl Ives

I remember being shocked when Ives was cast against type, playing a bigoted Senator who supported the burgeoning Ku Klux Klan in the 1977 miniseries "Roots". It was very odd to hear that kindly, gentle voice saying really horrible things.

In movies he tended to play tough guys (Big Daddy in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof) or bad guys (Rufus in Big Country)
