Hong Kong Disneyland set to begin $1.4 billion expansion

Very curious. Looks like they're going to take on Shanghai and not die quietly. Kind of weird creating that type of competition among yourself. Expansion looks good, I got a very new fantasyland vibe from the Frozen area. With the ice castle being off on the hill like the Beast's castle is now.

Didn't spirit indicate that this wasn't happening, or that Corliss was way off on what was going to happen (especially with the castle)? That seems odd that Corliss was correct on this one and spirit was a bit off on his intel.
However Corless wasn't completely right either. Based on the concept photo it appears this new castle will be built on the existing castle rather than tearing down the current one. But yes Spirit said this wasn't happening.

Wow, this is pretty big. I am still surprised about the makeover to the castle as I loved the look of the Castle with the hills behind it and this new one, especially with the water area in front as part of the show really feels like mirroring what Shanghai has

Also find it interesting they are putting Marvel Land on where Autopia is only because when I was there that had the longest wait time and seemed pretty popular (also, it was vastly superior to the versions in Disneyland in California or WDW). Also interesting they didn't say which popular marvel franchise will be the focus (from the picture it looks like Antman will be the theme taking over Buzz Lightyear)

I like the look of the Arandale area - though wondering what the other ride will be ... from the one picture it looks like an entrance into the mountain side under the Ice Palace leading me to think could be an indoor/dark ride and makes me wonder if it is a mirror of the Frozen ride in EPCOT ... the whole area makes me think of what the Norway pavilion would be if they started from scratch to be Frozen

Yeah it kind of sucks that Tokyo and Hong Kong get full themed frozen lands and we got a re themed existing ride.

Though, we are getting Star Wars Land, Toy Story Land, and Pandora ... I'd take those over Frozen Land personally - can't have everything everywhere. Just seems odd that they are going with a Castle set up similar to what is in Shanghai and then Frozen which Tokyo is getting.

I mean, I know things aren't super close to each other but just think they would want more of what isn't already in in one of the other Asian parks

Spirit says the funds that were going to go towards a second gate are now going towards this so no second gate for a while at least.

Look at the Chinese being competitive against each other... how cute! That said, let's not forget that each park has the population of America within hours of each park. The parks will be fine.

I'm completely ok with Frozen not getting a full land at the American parks. I don't think any one IP should get nearly an entire land. Star Wars is acceptable because it's a whole universe - same with Marvel.

Cars?

I'm not a fan of the Cars franchise but I will give it to them that the Cars Land is amazing. Cars works better than Frozen does for a land IMO. You got a much more intimate tour of the town and world in Cars - characters owned the businesses that they go to in the movie and they recreated them for Cars Land. Frozen you get the town that you don't see much of except for the palace, Elsa's ice palace, Oaken's shop, and the outdoor areas between. You wouldn't really have the room to give the outdoor areas the space they need to feel right unless they were inside.

These projects seem like Disney will be getting away with doing as little as possible for as long as possible. I wouldn't be shocked if Shanghai's spending per year will be twice as much. Disney's capital outlay will be just over a hundred million per year for the next 6 years. That's roughly in line or down from the spending they've been doing at Hong Kong. Additionally whereas Hong Kong is rebuilding existing infrastructure (hub/castle) Shanghai will be all additions.

This isn't to say I'm not impressed by these additions, but this doesn't immediately show extreme commitment either.

Expect the Avengers attraction to be either one of or the greatest attractions in the world. That thing will be pulling out all the stops. I wouldn't be shocked if that thing becomes the most expensive attraction ever developed. This is their answer to pirates.

We're just going to have to wait...

That castle is also ugly. Why did the pinnacle of castle design happen in 1955 and 1971? Even Paris fans should react in dismay.

That's a good thing to hear. I know WDW sort of took a hit from Shanghai. Glad to hear this should have minimal to no effect on WDW
