This is based on an experience I had today.

You're buying something.

You're given back too much change.

Do you bring the mistake to the attention of the clerk, or just go about your business?

I have to give it back!
I don't want someone to get in trouble if I can help it.

Once my dad and I were at the movies. Usually with us, we hardley ever go to the movies...and when we do we usually sneak in pop/candy, and buy a small popcorn. Well this time we figured, what the heck? We bought a small popcorn, and two medium drinks. When the guy rang it up, it came out to be like eight dollars or something like that.

My dad hand's him a ten. The guy at the cash register gives us our stuff, and hands us our change. As my dad is walking away, he notices that the guy gave us back our ten, and added in 50 cents to boot. Yes, we actually made money by buying consessions at the movie. Normally he would have talked to the person, but heck, stuff at the movies is so expensive nowdays that we figured we'd keep it.

I always count my change to make sure that they give me the correct amount. They have never given me too much change before. I suppose that I would probably give it back. I assume that registers have to keep a penny by penny tally of all of the money in the box.

I usually don't notice until I walk away because I just stuff the money in my pocket. lol
:D

same thang here

Same thing with me, i always takeso much time gettig the $$ back into me wallet into my purse i literally jsut shove it in my pocket and move and then put it away once i'm outta the way. Cant say ive ever had this experiance before.....not to me directly anywyas

i usually dont notice. you know. completely oblivious to the world and such. but when i do notice that thought of "hey, lets be a good citizen and bring it back" flys away all too quickly.

It depends on how much it is. If it's like 30 cents, I wouldn't bother, but if it was 10 dollars or something I would.

After having been a cashier I'm more in tune to it now. You have to pay attention, especially if they're new bills. One time I was given $100 in 20's and they were new and 2 got stuck together and the lady walked off, luckily she noticed and was nice enough to bring it back to me.

So Sparx you didnt share...what happened and did u give back the money or keep it?

Well, I probably wouldn't notice that I'd been given the wrong amount of change. If I did notice... I might try to give back the extra, but, frankly, I might be too shy to.

Depends on the situation, the amount, how much of a rush I was in...etc.

>>> change ...

How helpful, friendly, courteous, and cheerful* have the store personnel been to you in the past?

>>> stuff

Bad idea. Put the money back in your wallet. Otherwise next time you pull out your wallet, some of the crumpled bills may come out and fall on the floor, possibly unbeknownst to you.

>>> new bills
Crinkle each "one" to be sure it is not two.

>>> popcorn
Clerk gives back too much change
(ye thinks to yeself) "Yes we actually made money on this, heck stuff at the movies is so expensive.."
(you didn't hear this) "The register is short so I'm going to take it out of your pay"
(you do hear this) "Fire! Fire!"
Everyone gets up in the dark and runs for the exits trampling everyone else.
(on the 11 o'clock news) "arson by a disgruntled employee"
(rewind; me, instead, at counter holding up the excessive change) "Uh, how much did the popcorn cost? (Ph.D. in math or my answer to your PM needed to understand this last sentence.)

* >>> trivia question
The four adjectives above go with eight other adjectives to describe _____ (fill in the blank; PM me if you need help. Hint: all 12 are often recited in sequence, the ones listed are usually #3, #4, #5, and #8.)

This has only happened to me once.
I went ice skating and it cost nine
dollars for skates and to skat. I paid
with a twenty and somehow got
eighteen dollars back. I probably
would have said something but I
didn't even realize it until I got
home.

One time I was at the mall with
my friend and she bought something
for like two dollars with a five dollar
bill and they gave her ten dollars
back. She kept it and we called it
her karma (spelling?) money. She
ended up having really bad like
for the rest of the day.
