I am finally getting a newer vehicle after reaching 205,000 miles on my current Chevy Lumina! I think I would like a small SUV, but have concerns over safety in a short wheel base vehicle, but I don't want a big one. My husband has a Tahoe and I like driving it OK, but prefer something a bit smaller. I have heard that these small SUV's are more apt to turnover in a crash. Also, which is best on gas and most comfortable for a long trip. I know foreign made cars are rated higher than domestic, but is that also true for trucks and SUV's? Any info is appreciated.

Have you considered the GMC Acadia?

Myself, I don't like the Toyota Highlander (don't like Toyota's and just think it looks ugly). The new CRV is not bad...the front is a little ugly though. The Envoy probably is the worst on gas and is the biggest of the three. It would be my choice of those three though. The quality of foreign and domestic cars is not really that different these days.

I like the look of the Acadia, however, I have been told it is much more expensive than the Envoy.

That may be true. You could look at the Saturn version (forget the name). I think it is cheaper but I don't know the exact price.

I have a new CRV. I traded in my very large Toyota Sequoia for it. I love it. It's great on gas and I really don't feel like I'm driving something smaller. The CRV is made on an Accord chassis. Very nice ride. I only have 2WD, better on gas and don't really need the 4WD here. I have the navigation system also which is relly good. :thumbsup2

could you give me a ballpark figure on the cost of a new CRV?

I also have the new CR-V and LOVE it. It is so comfy. Rides great, good on gas. I think you'd like it

Depends on what you get. We got it loaded (leather etc). I think it was mid 20's.

I love, love, love my Highlander Hybrid. It's the best made vehicle I've ever owned, and I've had some nice ones. The gas mileage, the pickup and power, the comfort are great and it's sooooo quiet. The only thing I don't like is it's GPS system. It's so outdated that it's almost useless. I will buy another Highlander when I'm done with this one though.

Fully loaded with leather and navigation will be $28K
They start at about $21K on the lowest end.

Don't know if you know about the new Jeep Patriot or not. Just came out this spring. LOVE IT small SUV, gets super super gas milage. 25 in town. Give it a look before you buy, we are really happy with it.

I love my Toyota Highlander, I actually like the way it looks. I rides great and the size is just right, not too big or small.

I have a Highlander and I love it. But it's not really comparable to a CRV because it is a bit bigger and more expensive. A RAV4 is comparable to a CRV.

Have you looked at the Envoy? That is not a small SUV! It's huge!

I've been driving Saturn Vue's for the last six years and ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM. If you can get a 2007, you can probably get a good deal and they haven't changed the body yet (don't like the 2008 version so this may be my last vue). My 2006 has a honda engine so it gets pretty good gas mileage and it has excellent safety features.

Plus, Saturn service is amazing. I've never been treated so well by a car dealership in all my life. I've moved too and had to change dealerships and all Saturn service is great from what I've experienced.

If gas is a concern you could get the Highlander Hybrid, but it's pricey. It has a new design for 2008 and looks really cool and is now at the top of the Consumer Reports Best list. That's a mid-sized, with 3 rows of seats and I'm guessing the Envoy is too.. The CR-V is a small SUV. The 3 you're looking at aren't really comparable. The Saturn Outlook has also been getting great reviews.

I love my CR-V! It's a comfortable ride and a lot of fun to drive! :thumbsup2

I have driven Honda's since I learned to drive - love their vehicles!

Consumer Reports really dumps on the Trailblazer/Envoy models. Reliability is terrible. Gas mileage is horrible.

My in-laws have 06 Trailblazer (mechanically same as Envoy)...they get about 15mpg around town.

I'd go with the CR-V.

Ok, just my opinion...but I would take the Honda or Toyota over the GMC any day, and the reason being is that they are a "Honda" and a "Toyota". We test drove a brand new GMC Envoy, yes it was nice inside but it was so sluggish that I told my husband I would never buy it. I also didn't like the amount of room in the back, there wasn't much space at all for groceries/cargo. My parents just got a brand new Rav, and they love it. I've been in it a few times and it is wonderful with lots of power.
