We are stupped by this essay question - can anyone give us some suggestions:

Why did the Townsend Acts make the colonists feel like children?

rules, rules and more rules!
do you have a copy of the Townsend Act?

It was made to
totally control the colonists. Do students in school feel like
the colonists might have when they have to obey even the
most trivial rules-like "only one child in the bathroom at a
time", "no talking in the hall", "raise your hand to speak"
and so forth. Just my quick idea about drawing comparisions.
Others may have a better analogy to draw.

OK, well here is a synopsis of the Townsend Acts:

In 1767, the British passed new taxes on glass, paper, teas, paints and other goods shipped to the colonies from Britain. Prime Minister Charles Townsend wanted to raise money to cover the cost for defending the colonies, and pay the salaries of governors and judges in the colonies. These were known as the Townsend Acts.
The colonists reacted by refusing to buy British goods. The colonists argued that they shouldn't be taxed since they had no representation in the British government. The colonists rallied behind the phrase, "No Taxation without Representation." Again Britain was forced to remove the taxes, all except for the tax on tea.

I don't understand how they made the colonists "feel like children" except maybe that he was trying to trick them. They wouldn't pay internal taxes but he thought they wouldn't mind paying taxes on imports. Other than that, I don't know.

The Townshend Acts did the following:

Imposed a tax on

1. Paper
2. Lead
3. Glass
4. Tea

and provided for Tax Collectors to collect upon these taxes. (Can you imagine how popular they were?)

Further, the New York legislature was suspended until soldiers were allowed to quarter in New York. (Can you say tattletale?)

I guess you can call the soldiers dad and the tax collectors mom. ;)
