When your kids are going through state testing, do the teachers give them homework?

I'm a little ticked about this! DD's in the 4th grade and she's going through her state testing this week and had homework over the weekend, last night and tonight. All the 4th graders have homework, but the 5th graders don't.

:confused3

That just doesn't seem right to me.

Just went through this last week with my 4th grader. Testing everyday and homework on three of those days. His also being slammed with tests this week because the quarter ends Friday and testing was not allowed last week.

When I was teaching, we weren't allowed to give any homework during testing. The kids are stressed enough.

I don't know if its the same testing buy my 8th grader is going through testing this week as well and hes had homework everynight as well.

I have NEVER been allowed to assign homework in any of the schools I've taught in during testing week. BIG NO NO! I agree they should not have homework during that week.

I have a 3rd and 5th graders and they are taking the PSSA's this week and have no homework. Its been heaven for me!

That's what she's taking. :teeth:

We get all kinds of letters sent home to us telling us how to feed them and how early to put them to bed, make sure they're well rested and prepared. Yet they still have to do homework?

My 6th and 8th graders were tested last week. No homework for the 8th grader, the 6th grader had some, just a bit. They're in the same school.

My kids still get homework during state exams but I don't really see what the big deal is. It's not as if they need the time to study since they don't study for state exams.

Your kids don't take practice exams? My DD came home with a packet an inch thick that she had to do -- filled with practice questions! That was in the 3rd grade. This year she did it in school.

They really stress these kids out when it comes to the state testing. Why stress them with homework?

It has been hit or miss around here,,,actually this is the first year I can say my DS has NOT had homework during testing (6th grade) but then again, since they dropped the writing portion of it, he hasn't had any book reports either. :rolleyes2 So that pretty much confirms the "teach to the test" theory around here. DD (10th grade) always has homework no matter what.

My kids took the FCAT last week. My 14 yr. old (8th grader) took the Science part yesterday. The only one that had homework every single night, also the weekend, was my 4th grader. His teacher is the only teacher ever to assign my kids homework during FCAT week. :confused3 He had homework over Thanksgiving weekend & Winter Break. The only time that my DS hasn't had homework was during his teacher's religious holidays. Anyway, that's more than you wanted to know, but it really gets out of hand with her. :sad2:

Nope. 3rd grade here and I am enjoying a few days without homework and so is dd.

Last week was the ISAT'S here. The school's here make a very big deal the have practice tests and study for at least 2 weeks prior. DS is in the 5th grade he had homework too.

My kids are in fourth grade and are taking the New Jersey ASK test this week. Both of their teachers are giving homework, lighter than usual though.

My kids are in 3rd and 6th and 7th and they had no homework while testing was going on.

We have testing here in Maryland this week & last week.

Get this....DDs middle school chorus teacher always has mandatory chorus rehearsals at 7 a.m. (school begins at 8 a.m.) once or twice a week when a chorus concert or festival is coming up.

Well, she's having these 7 a.m. rehearsals on the days of the state testing. I had her miss one or two of the rehearsals just so she could sleep in a little.
The chorus teacher was very nice about letting her miss.

BTW...the school is not giving homework...just having these darn (believe me, I used harsher words than "darn" when I heard) 7 - 8 a.m. rehearsals.

Ditto. DD's after school homework isn't causing a problem with her in school test taking. She was given the test prep packet weeks ago and that's been completed. Sure, I like it when she doesn't have homework, but it isn't a problem if she has it during the Ask4.

I just had an issue with this while my son was taking the FCAT. He's in third grade.

Not only did he have homework, but two tests. He had a time test for multiplication and a social studies test, had to know all the state capitols and city nick names @@.

Luckliy he's pretty good at both.

I spoke with the principal about this and she said the teachers were told no homework during testing. :confused3 So, we'll see what happens.

I would have liked to have spent more time going over FCAT stuff instead of spending time on homework.

My DD is also taking state tests this week (6th grade), although they have no homework. And they are allowed to chew gum (I have no idea why)...that is the biggest deal amongst the students.

DS in 4th grade and no homework during NJASK week.
Of course, we are lucky in that his teacher feels that the kids are under too much pressure and has been downplaying it as much as he can. Some how the kids came home calling it the NJ pain in the ask test but I'm sure they didn't get that from their teacher. :rotfl:
