So I have read that this hotel is fairly new? (or maybe I read an old website), but we are staying here next month. Usually we do the timeshare thing, but that is already being used for another vacation this year. I am slightly worried about staying in a hotel I have never visited, and was wondering if anyone ahs stayed here, or knows of people who have. Any info would be great such as driving time to Disney (Magic Kingdom), nearby GOOD places to eat, ect. Thanks in advance to any responses!!!

According to my AAA Book for Florida, pg. 716, Homewood Suites have a
3 star rating, it's a "small scale hotel". 2-3 stories tall, interior and exterior corridors, parking is on site.

amenities: video games, voice mail, safes (fee), irons, hair dryers, pool-heated outdoor and wading, whirlpool, playground, exercise room, sports court, basketball, game room; gift shop, free evening beverages; laudnry/ area transportation to disney.

It's a hotel chain by the Hiltons

Hope this helps. I, myself, am wondering about the Hampton Inn Maingate East, but so far read a few great comments about it.

Thank you so much for your information. Do you know what resturants are around, and where the closest grocery store is?

Thanks again!

I've stayed at this particular Homewood Suites 3 times in the past 2.5 years, so obviously I'm very happy with it! We normally get the 1 BR with 2 DB. There is a door that shuts between the bedroom and the living room, which is really nice if someone wants to go to sleep earlier or take a nap and other people want to stay up and watch TV. There is a TV in both the bedroom and the living room. The kitchen has a microwave, stove top, and real refrigerator. The frig is supposed to have an ice maker, but sometimes the ice maker doesn't always work. I just got them to give me some ice at the front desk.

One really important thing - call and ask for a room that does *not* face I-4. I had one of these rooms on one of my trips, and I had to get them to change it the next day because we could hear the traffic all night long.

As far as grocery stores, I usually go to the Publix that is only about 5 minutes away if you head down 192 East. I don't remember how far down it is from the hotel, but I don't think it's more than a few miles away. I'm sure the hotel front desk will be able to give you better directions!

Let me see if I can remember some of the restaurants:

Going 192 East:

Wendy's
Subway
Olive Garden
TGI Fridays (I think!)

192 West:

I'm pretty sure I remember seeing The Outback as well as other chain restaurants

There are tons of chain restaurants on 192 in either direction, so I'm sure you won't have any problems finding something that will work for you. I haven't been to WDW since September of last year, so I'm only remembering the places that I ate at!

Have fun!

**edited to add**

I just noticed that you're from Virginia, too! Which part of Virginia are you from?

Izzy,
Thanks for all that great info! Wow, I love when people are so honest and open about their vacations. And I most certainly will call and make sure we are not facing I-4.
How was cleanliness? I am a BIG room cleanliness freak and have high expectations since I usually do the villa thing. As far as the resturants and grocery go, thank you again. It is hard for me to picture where Homewood is located. As many times as I have been down there (5), I am trying to remember it's location. My memeory is poor, yes, but anal when it comes to particulars such as location, ect.
We live in Newport News (I am born and raised here, DH is from NY). I see you live in the valley, and I am SOOOO very jealous. Actually, my DH and I HAD planned on taking our vacation to the mountains to another cabin like 2 years ago, but DH woke up one morning and said "Let's go to Disney in September instead". Who was I to argue with him? :hyper:

Thanks again Izzy!

Dawn

I never had a problem with room cleanliness. My last trip there was probably my "worst" one and even that wasn't that bad! I'm just kind of picky. Housekeeping was a little spotty as far as forgetting to leave towels one day, washclothes the next, etc. However, everything was always clean. My mom was with me on all three of these trips, and she can spot a dust bunny at 50 paces.

The hotel is not new, but it definitely isn't old. (I'd guess it's about 5 or 6 years old, if not even a little less.) I've noticed over the past 2.5 years that it is getting a little more worn looking, but still nothing bad. I think most hotels go through this, especially in a high room traffic area like Orlando. The biggest problem I had with them on the last trip was with one of our beds. The bed I was using tilted to the side to the point where I felt like I was falling out of the bed. I asked them to bring me a new box spring since that's where I thought the problem was. Rather than fixing my bed - with the obvious problem - they exchanged out the mattress only on my mom's bed. I called again and explained that I needed a new box spring on my bed, and this time they only brought me the mattress. After a trip to the front desk, they finally probably me the new box spring. When they took the old one off, the wooden slat was completely broken in two! I suspect some kids had been jumping on the bed a little too enthusiastically.

You probably don't remember seeing the hotel because it isn't right on 192. You will turn onto Parkway Blvd (you'll see a sign for the Radisson Parkway hotel) and wind back through there about 1 mile or so. At the end of that road you will see the Hampton Inn almost straight ahead and the Homewood Suites to the left. You will also see both of these hotels from I-4, too. Take the 192E exit off of I-4, and at the first stoplight, turn left and this is Parkway Blvd. (If you take a right at this stoplight, you can wind your way over to Celebration.)

I found the location really convenient for getting to the parks and getting around in general. It was nice not being right on 192 with all of that hustle and bustle. The breakfast was OK - nothing to write home about, but certainly not bad since it was free. On Monday through Thursday evenings, they had a manager's reception with munchies and drinks. Their idea of munchies was my idea of dinner! Things I remember them having on different evenings include hot dogs, tacos, and baked potatoes with various toppings. They usually had a small "make your own salad," too. For drinks they had wine, beer and soft drinks. I want to say that this lasted from 5 - 7 on each of those evenings.

I had to laugh about you loving the mountains - I love the beach! I guess we always want what someone else has! I have to agree with you about taking your husband up on going to WDW rather than going to the mountains!

Hope you don't get too much wind or rain from Alex. It sounds like from Richmond to the east you folks have been getting drenched with rains lately. I doubt if you need any more!

Thanks for all this great info. I couldn't have asked for anything more from these great people on these boards. Ask and ye shall receive. I'm thinking that manager's reception is going to be nice. We will only be able to take advantage of it for 4 days, but I know we will be stopping by. Especially since DH and I get tired and usually call it an early night. Is it all free? Should we leave tips there or anything? What about housekeeping. Did you leave a tip?
Alex. Is that his name? LOL. I have been ignoring the weather the last 2 weeks because all it seems to do is rain. I told a fellow worker today that it is feeling like Florida with all these afternoon showers. My mom has been filling me in on the Tropical Storm, and yeah, we have been getting hit hard. Not so much wind (yet) but the rain is incredible. The amount of damage the rainfalls have been bringing is out of control.

Hi again Dawn (now that we're on a first name basis!),

The manager's reception is free. There is a tip jar there for the person who pours the beer or wine. The lady who worked the reception the last time we were there was so sweet, that we did tip her a dollar or so each evening. We tipped housekeeping a few dollars a day, but we usually do that. I don't think it's required or even necessarily expected. One kind of neat thing housekeeping does is to put all of your dirty dishes in the dishwasher and turn it on for you. It makes it nice when you get back from the parks that you have clean glasses and plates that you only have to unload from the dishwasher.

Have fun in WDW! I'm jealous - I usually go at least once a year, but it's not going to happen this year. On the good news side, though, I am going on a cruise to Bermuda and will be leaving out of Norfolk. It sure will be nice to drive to the port rather than have to fly to it!

Izzy

Hey Izzy!

Don't be jealous! We all have our time, and yours will be coming sooner than you think. :sunny:

Ooooo! But I am REALLY excited about housekeeping doing the dishes for us! I am almost as excited about that as the trip itself.

Have fun on your cruise! DH and I have never been on one, but are thinking about it for next year.

***UPDATE*** Just so you know, HURRICANE Alex moved right past us with only touching us with his rain bans. DH and I weren't affected, but my sis is on the Outer Banks this summer and I haven't heard from her yet.

I just hope that my stay a Homewood is pleasant and clean. Is that too much to ask for? LOL :earseek:

Regarding the age of this resort (if it's the one on Palm Parkway) we stayed there in 1996 and it was going under a complete renovation at that time; which was a nightmare. We finally left after three nights because of the many and constant problems related to the renovation, i.e. all the cabinets doors were off in the kitchen, dirty bandaids on the floor from previous occupant, shower drain not working and standing in a foot of water during shower and multiple other problems. The final straw was when we came back from the park at 6:00 p.m. They had painted the entire landing in front of our second floor room. We had to literally jump from the stairs to the door so our shoes wouldn't get paint on them. Our room hadn't even been cleaned. When I called about it, they said, well it's because the landing was painted and we couldn't get to it. PULEEHZE. You don't take an entire property down for renovation all at the same time. We left right then and there, went down to the Radisson and never went back. BTW, after I returned from vacation and sent a detailed, but non-confrontational letter, we got all our money back. So, in the long run, I guess they took care of us. Reason I went through the long dissertation: the property is not new at all. (I think all of our problems were related to the renovation process, though)

rlduvall,
Which one did you stay at? The one at 3100 or the one at 8200? There is a considerable price difference between the two and now I am starting to realize why. Any info will be VERY helpful. Thank you!

:hyper:

Izzy has the right one. Homewood Suites Maingate is on Parkway Blvd, just north of US 192 and East of I-4.

Riduvall is talking about Homewood Suites Lake Buena Vista, on Palm Parkway, just west of I-4, near the Crossroads area.

Easy to get confused with all the similar names.

I am so confused! LOL

You are right Johnny, the names are confusing! I just checked my printed reservation info, and I am at the Maingate one (I keep questioning myself about which one I am staying at after reading so many posts).

Which one is closer to Disney? The Maingate one or the other? Is Maingate newer? And....why is there such a price differece? Maingate is $20 cheaper (at least) than the other! :hyper:

Which one is closer to Disney?

They are about the same distance but Maingate (Parkway Blvd) is easier, only one stoplight between you and the parks and it is a right turn (turn on red).

As to age, I don't know for sure but I would say that Maingate is more than 5 or 6 years old. We haven't stayed in either one but have stayed near both so I'm familiar with the area.

Thank you, thank you!

You have been very helpful and my mind is now at ease. I get very anal and logical when planning vacations (I am the superior officer over my DH on this one).

I am just nervous about staying where I have never visited/stayed before and the rates are too good to be true.

pumpkinfish:

I am the one who wrote the discouraging review above. I double checked which one it was as it was right next to the Radisson Parkway. JohnnyOldBoy was correct. We were on Palm Parkway. The other Homewood is one Parkway Boulevard. Isn't that confusing???? Please remember, though, that I sincerely believe the majority of our problems were them taking an entire property down for renovation without advising people when they were booking. I think your stay will be great. I did love the extra room it gave us but I am now hooked on staying onsite. Have fun.

I really appreciate the input nonetheless rlduvall. You never know who may be reading this.

I finally decided to just go ahead and let it be in God's hands.

Thanks again!
