Hi- glad to see the thread again...just wanted to check in- we're pretty much unschoolers with some math progams thrown in when necessary,...my little guy LOVES math curriculum... we had a great trip to WDW in January,and the kids did awesome in saving for the trip,and handling their money while choosing what to buy! In Disney, there's just so many choices! I'm always so satisfied when the kids come home with $$$ in left their pockets,and I feel the same way about me and DH too!

Hi everyone! I think I posted on this thread about 4 months ago! We moved West of Atlanta, GA, at the end of November. I loved reading have homeschool discussions! Anyone out there on the Dis that live West of Atlanta???

I have 4 kids-2 sets of twins. I homeschool my first set and the second set will start next year.

Hiya! Is it too late to reply to this thread? I haven't seen it before. We're homeschoolers, and I would love to see a homeschool board. Would it just be Disney related, or all things homeschool?

I've only skimmed the previous posts--there are quite a few of them!--so I didn't see--does anyone use a distance learning school, like COVA or CAVA? Does anyone have older kids? My oldest will be 12 this summer, and I'm thinking of starting him at a distance-learning school to get a diploma, but I'm a bit over my head. Up until now, we've been mostly unschooling with some classes at a local co-op.

Julie, sorry to hear about your mom. Mine passed away last fall, my dad has been gone 16 years. That, on top of my dh being out of work for a few months followed by a long distance move, and we got WAAAAAYYYYYY behind in school last fall so YES, we will be doing school this summer to catch-up a bit. We do Sonlight, Apologia science and Saxon math. We are currently applying to some co-ops here. I mostly want to do the enrichment stuff with them, not educational stuff. Oldest dd wants to take a World Views class for hsers which sounds kinda heavy, lot of reading, writing, speeches and debates. I think she will love it, but it will mess up our vacation schedule as we would not want her to miss classes. Looks like we may not make it back to WDW until June 07. We do have a few closer trips planned before then though, San Antonio and Hot Springs Ar!!!!!!!!

laceemouse--what Apologia science are you doing? Is there a set curriculum or just their topic books? We are doing Apologia Astronomy right now and love love love it!

Welcome to all of the new folks. It is good to see more and more people every time this thread gets bumped up. As for a homeschool board, it may not be happening any time soon but the moderators on the Family board are quite open to us posting any homeschooling threads here. Just put OT:Homeschooling and then your topic in the thread title. I will be posting one about math later this morning.

Right now it seems my little break is over as all three kids are in the office now!!

Julie, my younger kiddos are doing Sonlight science, but I have bought the Botany book for ds to read (he loves non-fiction/science stuff.) My older girls are doing the Apologia General science (7th grade) and Biology (9th grade.) I bought them from Sonlight and you get a schedule. We also bought their microscope for the Biology and it is wonderful! Have to say, NONE of my 3 girls loves science like I did, but I still think Apologia is wonderful! I enjoy it!!

Blackunicorn--I have not heard of any of those but my oldest is 9. There are some folks with older kids and even a few veteran homeschoolers who check in on here every once in awhile. If I were you I would start a new post looking for older homeschooling families and see if any of them can give you feedback. That way your questions won't get lost amongst this very long thread.

My advice--pick things you want to do --but don't focus on structure.

this was the advice given to me. They grow old enough for school soon enough that going to all that trouble when they are young really isn't worth all that.

We tried but got hit by hurricanes in 2004. We much more enjoyed the year without curriculum.

A preschooler likes to be read to, likes to paint (or do crafts or anything artsy) and that's about it.

There are many craft books out there. Rainbow Resouce Center has a nice catalogue.

We have the calendar with craft suggestions through out the year. I am not diligent with using it, but it is a theme calendar and very creative. Very inexpensive and that would fill your entire year.

I think I might have asked this before on here, but I don't remember so here goes. I'm just curious as to where all of you "hold class". Do you have a room in your house just for school purposes? Do you do it in the dining room? Den? Like I said, I was just wondering.

We turned our (seldom used) dining room into a schoolroom. I use the dining room table as my desk, and DD has her own desk. Before we started homeschooling I was a teacher, so I put my bookshelves in there too. I just like having everything in one place, but I know others who just do school in the kitchen or living room too.

I am so, so excited to see this thread! I will begin homeschooling my 10yr old DS and 8yr old DD this Fall. I would love to talk to fellow Dis'ers who homeschool and love Disney as much as my family does. What a blessing to find this!!

We used to use a combination of the couch in the family room (Sonlight reading), the kitchen table (desk work, art and science experiments), and just about anywhere else.

We just recently moved some rooms around and now we are mainly in what used to be our "playroom". I have two large book shelves with our school books and misc. chapter books, etc. I have a couch, 2 bean bags, an adjustable height table (bought at used office furniture store) and a couple chairs. I have a closet where I keep our math manipulatives and science experiment supplies along with bins of completed work and books for the next year. We sit on the couch in this new schoolroom for Sonlight reading and do the written work at the table (or in a beanbag). We still use the kitchen table for art and science experiements (if they require the use of water, etc.).

I am at the end of my first year homeschooling my kindergartener. We live in Idaho our public school money can be used towards a charter school. So it is free to us. Materials are sent to me including a computer to use. Also we are paid $15 per month for internet access. My son is in Speech therapy (my main reason for not sending him to public school) which I have to drive to once a week but am reimbersed for mileage. The program that is followed is the K12 program. Everyother week we have contact from our support teacher who calls to make sure all is well. A few times a month there are field trips for the kids to interact together. The school has a great phonics program and my son is already reading fairly large words and first grade reader books. My son's speech has greatly improved and it is great that he is in an environment where he has never been teased or made to feel bad about it. The nearest elementry school that my child can attend is 25 miles away-that is too long of a bus ride for a small child. It is hard work but very rewarding to teach your child.
