Homeschool for preschool?

I think moderation is the key. I don't see anything wrong with children watching TV. To suggest that TV is bad and only commercial I think is a bit harsh. It's entertainment. It's a nice idea, sitting with my two year old sharing meaninful conversations, but we really do need a break from one and other. Plus I would get all stinky if he didn't watch Dora while I took a shower. You wouldn't want me to get stinky. I suppose having a stinky grouchy mother might be worse then watching Dora. I am sorry if I have offended you. I just think that if a person suggests that they know whats best for others then they should be prepared for someone to disagree. Again I'm sorry and I am also sorry for getting off topic.

Without Barney when my DS was little, i would have stunk for 3 years. During those first three years I was also the primary caregiver for my sister's two children during the day and my husband worked 12-14 hours a day so I could be home. Sometimes you have to have a break and that break makes you a better mom. The boys watched Barney twice a day. One for my shower and the other to start some dinner!!! They also watched some music videos and sometimes on a rainy day they would watch another PBS show or two. We also talked and read and colored and played lots every day. We went places and explored all kinds of things. DS went to school reading and scored a 99% on his kindergarten admission test. I agree it all about moderation. The truth is kids are really tough little people. As long as you follow the first rule of child development which says, "DO NO HARM", all the variables in child rearing work themselves out. Follow your heart and use a little common sense and ENJOY your child. TV or no TV is such a small thing in the whole picture of a happy healty child.

I was just reading through the homeschooling thread and wondering if anyone has any info on a preschool homeschooling program? Our dd turns 3 in 2 weeks and everything we can find is for K and up. We would love to be able to integrate our WDW trips into her learning! Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Hey, dizneefamily5! I have an awesome website for you - www.funshineexpress.com. It is a prepackaged preschool curriculum for 2 1/2 - 5 year olds. I am the owner of an in-home preschool and I use this program supplemented by some of my own activities, but used to use this program only. Check it out. It is affordable and a WONDERFUL program that includes most of the supplies needed. Hope this helps and good luck!

I homeschool my daughter for preschool, and she LOVES it. I toured some preschools, but the kids were behaving reprehensibly (not just kid-fun behavior), and I didn't agree with their philosophies of just about anything...actually I checked out about 15 preschools, when I realized the only way to make it "perfect" for my daughter would be to design it myself for her.

We do one letter per week. All of our activities are built around that. We try to do a snack and a craft each day that relate to that letter. I also love to try to do a field trip that relates to the letter (Airport, bookstore, campground, etc. - it doesn't need to be an "actual fieldtrip", just going and walking around can be fun and educational, though our trip to the airport was an organized one with a guide, and it was great.) I also have her memorize a Bible verse to go with the letter ("As far as the east is from the west, so far does He remove our transgressions from us" was the one for A week; "Fear not, for I am with you." was for F week, you get the idea). It's amazing how quickly kids can memorize things at this age - they just soak it up like sponges, and she honestly LOVES it.

We do other stuff too...what I have are index cards for each activity. We have an index card for Snack, one for Craft, one for Bible Verse, one for Worksheet, and one for Missionary (we pray for one each day when we do school, and look up where they are on the globe...talk a little about that country while we're at it). She gets to pick which index card to do next (she always picks snack first, lol), and we can do the whole thing in 30-40 minutes. We can also take breaks in between cards, if she's not "in the mood". If we do all the cards for the day, she gets a sticker. It's very low pressure, very laid back (even if it doesn't sound that way). She dearly enjoys doing it, and I have a blast too.

We started doing this when she was 2. She was reading at 3, and she'll be 5 this year. She LOVES learning, loves "school", and...well, not to brag, but she's incredibly brilliant, well spoken, and has a lovely temperment and a kind heart.

I personally believe that "socialization" is highly overrated. There's no way that a four year old can teach another 4yo the appropriate way to behave or act. When she does get together with other kids (individually and in groups) she is quick to share, quick to smile and chat with them, quick to both initiate play and to follow along in a game that someone else initiates. She's good at taking turns, and encouraging to the other kids.

I'm so sorry that this sounds like a "toot my kid's horn" post, but I'm just trying to encourage you...doing preschool at home can be such a wonderful, rewarding, exciting, playful experience, and your child will not suffer academically or socially just because of not "going to" prechool. To top it off, considering the cost of preschools around here (even the church ones), I've probably saved about $2K by keeping her home for preschool!

Do what you feel is best for your child and family, regardless of my post or others. You know your kid best, and only you can make the best decision!

Just searching the dis for the homeschool thread and caught wind of this one.

We had the best intentions of doing pre-school last year and then got nailed by two hurricanes. Then I discovered that what we were doing wasn't important at all. We just focused on what we enjoyed.

It is exciting to finally begin homeschooling and PK3 & PK4....let it all happen sooner. It's not necessary--but it can be fun.

We begin Kindergarten in a couple of weeks (as long as our stuff arrives!!)---so this year we are doing the real deal with no weather excuses.

As far as television--we stick to non-commercial--so PBS for now....and Disney channel when we are someplace that has it. Toon disney and nick (and affiliates) are out for us.

My daughter caught wind of an Eggland's best commercial--and begged me to buy those eggs. We are finally out of that phase. But I just rather not expose her to any other commercials.

You guys make me wish I had cable again--I miss all the fun stuff it has!

Just my $.02-I personally do not see a problem with children watching TV and feel that is a decision each set of parents needs to make on their own.

I agree that all families must make this decision for themselves, but I thought I would add that the American Academy of Pediatrics believes it is harmful for children under 2 to watch any amount of television. It is in their guidelines.
