Homemade ornaments - please post your ideas

We just held the ornament carefully when my kids did it. I was the one holding the ornament and then each of my 3 kids put their thumb print on each of the ornaments. We waited for them to dry and then I had them write their name under their thumbprint (so each ornament had a thumbprint from each of the three kids) and decorate the reindeer.

I think I have done all of those. :) For the snowmen and reindeer.. unless your kids are really little please let them do the embellishments, even if you have to guide them. Those crazy lines they draw will mean more than the straight ones adults do. Always remember to date it too.

3-4 year olds always enjoy stringing beads on pipecleaners for some reason. This is cheaper and easier than buttons.

We have used decoupage glue and glitter pens to put their pictures on a ceramic ornament.

Sculpey is big here.. my kids have made some amazing things with that as they got older.

Paint a small terra cotta pot and string it so that there is a hook on one end and a bell inside.

Glass ornaments can be stuffed with all kinds of things. One year we popped popcorn inside of them and decorated the outside. You can do an "I spy" with tiny objects, melted snowman pieces, beach sand, etc."

One of my best parenting hints.. I have put my child's initials and date on the back of every ornament they have received over the years. I only have two, and they are boy/girl, but we still get confused every year about which kid some of them belong to. Then we just flip it over to look.

I give my kids an ornament every year and often I can't find what I am looking for so I make it. I think my favorite is a Harry Potter one I made for DD. I looked up lots of book quotes and typed them up very small. Then I stuffed them into the glass ball. I gave her a list of what they said. (You can read some of them from the outside.) Have fun!

To build on this, we do ornaments at the paint-your-own-pottery place every year. They paint the background (stripes, polka dots, abstract, whatever) and then we put a handprint on top. When they were tiny, I'd write the name on. But now I let them write the name on in pencil and I trace in the paint pen. The paint pen is really hard to use (even I have trouble getting nice even lines) so I can't let them do it or it would be one ugly blotch. But, by letting them do the pencil and faithfully tracing over it I still capture their adorable handwriting (crooked lines and all) while not having a big mess.

I used to make Salt Dough and cut out sugar cookies and paint for tree
I think recipe was from Morton Salt?

I don't know how old your daughters are, but I just made these glitter ornaments, and they're so pretty! They were pretty easy to make, too.

I drew snowmen and reindeer on mine.

The minwax polyacrlic works so much better for these ornaments. I made some usuing the floor cleaner last year and made some with the polyacrlic this year. The pledge ornaments don't sparkle as much.

Really? I find the pledge ornaments quite sparkly, so I'd love to see how sparkly the ones with minwax poly acrylic are! I'll have to try that!

I'm doing an ornament exchange on my next Disney Cruise. Does anyone have any homemade ornament ideas to exchange with other adults that won't be too heavy or break (glass) in my suitcase while flying across the country.
