Wow! Thank you so much for bumping this back up for us newer Disboard members to review. I always make home made gifts for family members and will think about some of the better ones and post a little later.

Thanks!:thumbsup2

I am a "stamper" so I have quite a few cheap stamps that I have purchased from Michaels and have lots of left-over odd sized cardstock that I have kept from all my past projects.

I have a friend who suffers from mental illness and this year when she was in the hospital I made her a "gift box" full of little cards that she could read each day. I purchased a 2inch by 2inch box at the 99 cent store and I cut left-over cardstock into 2inch by 2inch cards. On some cards I put scripture or inspirational messages, on others I used a stamp and/or did some artwork.

It lifted her spirits so much that I am now doing a bunch of these for Christmas gifts. I can customize them to suit the person involved but I can also do them in an assembly line type manner as well. :goodvibes

Subbing

This thread is like a great book. I'm exhausted, my eyes are about to fall out of my head & I can't stop reading.

Anyboby remember the "leather" pencil holders or vases? I'm going to have my little ones do these for gifts this year!

Take an old can, bottle or vase and cover with ripped bits of masking tape and color with shoe polish for faux leather!

Really more of a bump but will tell you what I have done.

We have several friends who have campers and although we do tend to camp together I have made name signs.

Went to Craft Mania and bought a wooden sign, letters that spell out their last name only and a wooden shape that goes along with their hobby.

For example, The Whitman's have a moose under their name as they enjoy moose hunting. I painted the outer edge of the sign green, moose is brown with a yellow eye, and name is in blue. Then I sealed it. Put 2 eye screws in and a small link chain so they can hang it.

Another one I have done is basically the but they got fish rather than a moose.

Did one for my Mom and DSF but put on trees as he is a logger.

Happy Crafting! :santa:

I think what I'm doing this year is making family 'movie' baskets.

Take a basket and fill the bottom with shredded paper. Put in boxed 'movie theater candy' (buy at Factory Card Outlet... cheap cheap cheap!) and buy a couple boxes of microwave popcorn. Take the popcorn pouches out and arrange with the boxed candy. I'll either then purchase some DVD's from the budget bins or put in a $15 gift card to Blockbuster. I'll then put shrinkwrap on it and tie with a bow. Ta-da! I'm guessing, if I do the gift card idea, it'll be around $25 per basket, as long as I can find some nice cheap baskets on Black Friday :thumbsup2

I got some really cute wooden baskets with snowmen, trees, reindeer, etc. painted on the trim at the Dollar Tree for the past 2 years. I always buy about 10 of them and either do the movie baskets or homemade goodie baskets.

My sister works for the company that makes Dr. Scholls products and they get free porducts or really cheap products all the time so she stocks up throughout the year and she makes all the girls a foot basket. I LOVE IT!!! It has clippers, files, foot creams, insoles for high heeled shoes, etc.

would love some more craft ideas for older kids to make for grandma's, etc!

I am having my DD make picture frames for their Grandparents. I but the unfinished frames from Michaels and then have them paint them and decorate them. You can do many things with these frames and they are always a hit around here.

Here is a picture of one that I did for my nephew and a halloween I did as well

Hi 8 Ears, I see you are from Maine and my married last name is WHITMAN so this statement caught my eye?? wonder if you are talking about some of my in-laws?? :confused3

I did a photo book on through one of the major photo hosting sites last year (IIRC, it was shutterfly). It came out very professional looking and MIL absolutely loved it. They were having a photobook special at the time, too, so it really was quite cheap.

Other things I have made: ballet slipper stocking for dd's dance teachers with candies and gift car inside, painted a round wooden box with apples and decoupaged a picture of a teacher on the top that read "teachers cannot live by apples alone". Inside were some of my homemade butter tarts that always get rave reviews (I knew that particualr teacher had teenaged sons so butter tarts would definitely get eaten!). Once (this was for year-end, though) I painted a pot in a green thta loked like blackboard green. In white crayon I had dd draw a picture and write around the rim "I <3 Mrs. V". The n I went over her work in white paint to make it look like chalk on a blackboard. I finished it with sealer. Then we planted a mini rose bush in it and wrapped it in cellophane. She loved it.

I have seen on this thread several different ideas for those clear glass ornaments. but last yr. I made them w/ popcorn in them. It takes a little practice and I had a few broken one but you put seeds in the ornament and put it in a paper bag. Pop in microwave and you have a cute ornament w/ popcorn in it. Time varies by your microwave and I noticed w/ mine that the more I did the time for each one after changed so you just have to hang out by it and wait for it to be done.

It also has directions for one w/ mini pinecones in it, ice cream ornaments and the candy train

I haven't read this whole thread yet so forgive me if this has been mentioned but I took the Gifts in a Jar idea and made a Meal Basket. For my 2 brothers and 1 sister and their families.
I got cheap Laundry baskets from the Dollar Tree (carry it from the bottom after filling)
I made 3 different Soups in a Jar (one for each family)and added canned chicken (tomatoes in one and corn in one depending on the soup)
I mixed the dry ingredients for Beer Bread and included a can of beer
3 jars of different desserts - 2 kinds of cookies & 1 brownie.
Then I added there favorite soda or koolaid for the kids.
Last year I found some of those twisted nails game (I took the directions out but taped it to the bottom of the appropriate basket so they could play with them awhile before cheating)
Finally, I add microwave popcorn, Blockbuster GC, fresh fruit and/or some of my homemade candy that no one else makes.

One of the best that I have ever recieved was from my sister she took pictures from my parents, us and the babies and made a calander that every month had a bunch of different seasonal pictures that brought back so many memories. I still cherish that calander.

Ooohhh....what a great thread!! Maybe this year we could get more pics of finished items. I LOVE to see what everyone creates!!
We have given sugar cookie decorating kits, to some of the kids we know. We usually deliver them, about a week before Christmas, while the excitement is still in the air. We bake and cut out some sugar cookies. Make some icing, include some jimmies and assorted sprinkles and the kids can have their own cookie decorating party, without Mom and/or Dad having to do any of the work. The kids LOVED it!! Some had never decorated cookies before. And again, it is something that can be used, instead of just another toyfor the toybox.;)
