Oh honey, those aren't even the showy ones. Those are the subdued mums.![]()
I do like the Hidden Mickey in them, though.
OK, now I am officially frightened!

So sorry, there is no cowbell for you."
Ohhhhh that is a great story!I have always hated Homecoming mums. Back when I was in HS/College, they were real mums. At least the fake ones don't stink. To me, mums are funeral flowers.
In college, I had a date to a game with a boy from up North, who was NOT used to mums. He was told by his roommates that he had to buy me a mum or it would look bad, so he did it. When he showed up with the mum, he confessed that he did not understand why anyone would want to wear such an ugly thing, but he didn't want to insult me by not getting one. He said, "But I drew the line at a cowbell. Why would you put a COWBELL on YOUR DATE? That's just insulting. So sorry, there is no cowbell for you." IThat guy was a sweetie.
This made me all goosebumpy, what a great thing to doGrowing up in South Texas, we loved our mums. We also had spirit ribbons for each game that cheered our team to beat the other side. We all signed each others ribbons each week. Then we attached them to flowers and wore them as mums, or wore them alone. When I got married, my best friend dug out an old spirit ribbon, signed by my classmates, and I pinned it under my wedding dress as "something borrowed."
Ain't that the truth!It's a Texas thing, y'all.![]()
My DD is also a Freshman and a bit of a self professed social nerd. She has no desire to go to a dance and is annoyed that it is all everyone is talking about. However, she does want a mum!I did not grow up in Texas. We moved here 11 years ago. My kids are now old enough for "Mums." This whole mum thing is new to me--as of a few years ago when my daughter showed them to me. My DD is a freshman this year. All that has been talked about between she and her friends (plus all over FB) is Homecoming--who asked who to go with them, how the question was asked, blah, blah, blah. To me it is over the top.
The mum thing is over the top too. Seriously, these things are over $100 to make!!! As I have been informed that the Mums have to be huge!!
I am really not looking forward to when I have 4 boys in high school at the same time![]()
I'm so glad I added a couple of bells to DD's!Awww, this thread is making me all nostalgic! I've lived in Texas my whole life and went to school in Southeast Texas. I graduated high school in 1997. The Homecoming Mums were a BIG deal, y'all! And I know they are crazy looking to everyone else, but they are a tradition! I wish I had time to find pics of some of the HUGE mums I had throughout school. I'm only 5 foot, so they literally touched the ground sometimes!
My biggest one was my senior year, because I was in the Homecoming Parade as a Sweetheart. I wonder how many towns still have big Homecoming Parades? They literally shut the town down for the afternoon parade before the big game. Good times!!!
And, I loved the cowbells on them! You had to make a jingling racket walking up and down the halls at school wearing your Mum, or you weren't doing it right!![]()
Oh, my.
Very good pointHonestly, I think it's cute harmless tradition. This seems healthy and fun especially when you think about what some high school kids are doing.
Oh, come on. You know you want one.![]()
When I was a school nurse in a high school back in the late '90s, I used to spend the entire day of homecoming safety-pinning these things to girls. They are so heavy that they are hard to keep on and up.
The cutest thing I ever saw on one was the tan Beanie Baby horse. The school was the Cowboys, so I guess it fit. But it was the horse and not the spectacle of a mum that was cute. I had to find and buy that horse, and he's sitting my desk right now. He's still cute.

Okay...these are so horrendously ugly. And I'm really not trying to offend anyone, I promise. I just don't get how wearing this giant thing around your neck all day is cute...or a "tradition"...when it seems so far from the original idea. And with the bears...don't get me started....to each his own, but if a kid showed up to homecoming at a high school near me, the other kids would be so confused.![]()
And I was just thinking I wish we had homecoming because how much fun that would be to start doing! Right now seniors get to paint their parking places at school and its fun to see what they come up with for those, I would love to see how they did homecoming mums!
