Just curious to what high school girls wear to Homecoming these days? When I was in school it was turtleneck sweaters with plaid skirts. Is Homecoming big like the prom now? Just curious to what is ahead for my dd who will be in high school next year. Thanks.

I think it depends on the region and also the school.

Here in Western PA the girls usually wear a long dress and get their done in an up-do. They don't spend as much as on a prom dress - but the dresses are on the formal side. (My DD used to hit the clearance racks after Prom and buy $150-$200 dresses for $20-$30 and save the dress for Homecoming!)

Its formal here, you don't spend as much as you would at prom, but homecoming is a big thing here.

It's big here too. Usually the girls will buy a "dressy" dress. Not casual like a sun-dress but not as fancy as a Prom dress. Some go out and get their hair and nails done too.

Around here--it is close to prom...We went to Melting Pot a few weeks ago--and a huge group was there. Mostly suit and tie type things--and not as many gowns..but definitely a formal affair.

Prom with the tuxedo's and dressier evening gowns is still a more fancy event.

Short dresses here in NJ, because when football season starts it's barely cold yet (late september), well at least 5 years ago this was the case.

The girls on the court wear formal dresses.

For the dance tonight it is semi-formal, I don't exactly know what that means now days. I'm taking my camera so we will see.

John-Cole is wearing khaki slacks, a green Polo shirt and his mocassin type shoes.

My DD just went and she wore a long dress. It was not as fancy as a prom dress, but was still a long, formal dress. We also had the "up-do" done. I had posted the pictures last weekend but now my DD took them out of her photobucket account and I can't post them anymore.

Chicagoland...semi formal to formal...semi meaning strapless or spaghetti strap dress in nice material...glittery or the like, my DD hits the after prom sales also...HUGE savings! My DD is tiny a size 0 to 1/2 or 1, so borrowing usually does not work out for her but other girls have done it. Her freshman year she started to go with the updo, but the gazillion bobby pins were giving her a headache so she had the stylist take them out! :earseek: I figured she was doomed by then, but wore it down and slightly flipped up and tips gelled, then siver glitter sprayed in it. There is a range of dress lengths..seems like the juniors or seniors can get away with the mini hootchie style or the all out glam formals, the underclassmne are usually in tealength/handkerchief or floor lencth. DD wore one that started at her knees in the front and swooped around to a floor length mini train in the back, burgundy with some crystal beading along the a-line, spaghetti straps, black strappy sandals (4 " heels, like I said, she's tiny) and an updo this year. She took a coupla motrin before the hair appt this time. She has gone with a datecombined with a group before, and this year went with a " guyfriend" and a group...she like this year much better. Usually as soon as the first poster goes up in the school halls, homecoming is all the kids talk about.
I actually saw some kids taking Limo's to the restaurant and dance this year, that's crazy....I don't care how many are splitting the cost...it is just out of place for HC in my opinion, I mean, what's left for Prom, or their Wedding even? A lot of the girls go to tanning salons, get their nails done, some of the jewelry is unbelievable. I am lucky DD is prett basic, the updo is as extravagant as she gets. She made her necklace from crystal beads at Hobby Lobby and barely wears any make-up...wore clear polish on her finger and toe nails, and brought her mangy summer flip -flops to change into at the dance. I didn't complain, it was better than her going barefoot on the floor! She paid for her dress and ticket, and we popped for her updo, dinner and throw-away camera. It seemed that even the couples went Dutch for dinner, and maybe the guy paid for the ticket.
I can't believe DD only has 2 HC left tho...that is if she graduates on schedule! ;)

Dress is definately fancy, but the oddest thing is that all the girls (we had 14 girls here) wear flip flops with their beautiful dresses, manicured nails and beauty shop hair-do's :teeth:
