I just rec'd an offer for 0%financing for 18 months.

Has anyone ever purchased carpeting at Home Depot and had them install it? We have 4 bedrooms, a landing and stairs that we are considering...

I would love to hear the good, the bad and the ugly on your experience...

Thank you!!!!!

We did, but it was about 8-9 years ago. We had a great experience and the installer did a great job. It would probably be best to get advice from someone in your area though, since AFAIK, Home Depot just uses local subcontractors for those installations, so I think experiences might vary widely.

Ours was a horrible experience! They did not cut around the toilet correctly. The seams were atrocious. I had to fight Home Depot every day for months. I would avoid them like the plague!

There are many "mom and pop" stores that employ their own installers - who would be greatful for your business.

Had carpet installed downstairs and on stairs. Loved the carpet, HATED the install . . . they didn't stretch it properly and it is pulling away from the wall and seems look terrible. At the time of the install, they put numerous dime-sized holes in the walls. I went down to inspect before they left, asked them in they were going to repair the walls that day or on a later date and the installer used some words that I am not allowed to type and stormed out of the house and left. I called the store, they did nothing. I called corporate and they said I needed to work with the store. Called the store every day for nearly a month before they agreed to give us a gift card (cannot remember if it was $50 or $100) to use toward the spackle and paint to fix the holes. NOT WORTH IT!

They use local installers so YMMV. I had them do one simple room with a very flat berber carpet: they cut the corners badly and in some places there were gaps where the carpeting did not reach the wall. :confused3

I had an inspector come in who agreed the job needed to be done over, and it was, with better installers and new carpet.

Try to meet with someone in the carpet department who looks like they have some experience and ask them if they can recommend a particular installer that they use. Otherwise, pay with a credit card and be prepared for a lengthy battle if something goes wrong.

You might want to start with just one room and if you like the installers, do the rest of the carpeting afterwards.

My sister used them a few years ago and was very unhappy with the results. The carpet seemed of lesser quality than in the store and the install left obvious seams in the middle of the room. I know she complained but I'm unsure if she was ever satisfied.

FWIW, I use a local company who doesn't nickel and dime you (fee to remove existing carpet, fee to move furniture, etc) that even though you initially think they are a bit more expensive, in the end they work out to be the better deal.

Re: 0% financing offer---this is something else you could comparison shop.

Happy shopping!:hippie:

We had a great experience. But keep in mind, the installers are local contracters they sub the work out to. But, if you have any issues you go through Home Depot to fix them. We picked a great quality carpet & top of the line padding because the carpet is in our basement. We had them do the staircase, a hallway and bedroom. They did a great job and we love the carpet and have had it about 2 years now.

Like someone else has said, they use local subcontractors to do the installation, and we were very happy with ours.

Now, if I did it again I would not pick the same carpet, but that is not Home Depot or the installers problem, just that I let my DH pick it out against my better judgement.

We just replaced our carpet, here is what I suggest.

Goto to home depot and check out a couple of different carpet samples, dig your fingers down into the carpet in several places, see what you feel. Then goto several local carpet stores and do the same with the various grades of carpet. You will notice a significant different, the thickness / density of the HD carpets were a LOT less than even the cheapest carpets at the local stores.

As for the install, HD will use a local sub and perhaps a different one for each job so its really tough to compare.

We went with a local company and were VERY happy with the results…

All these BIG retailers use outside contractors now. You get who you get.
The local shops are more apt to not only match pricing but also offer better customer service.
My dad used a large store, the install for the carpet was good, not great, they did not vacuum up the little pieces left behind, Just felt like it was an okay job.
They also installed hardwood, THAT is another story. The corners are Poor at best, the gaps show, they never even filled those, though Good installers do not even Use fillers, no need too...... they cut correctly the first time. The sills are not even, the entire job was below average at best, and also done by the same company. It was a one time use of that store, chosen because they had a 0% finance or 10% discount. Not worth it IMHO.
Id go local and use someone that actually cares about their work product and service.

Just want to say that even the appliances, everything at these BIG stores have the reduced quality appliances, etc...one thinks they are getting that same name brand, but by checking models and such you will really see the vast difference in the quality...as is typical, you basiaclly get what you pay for..
