Hello DISers! :wave2:

Has anyone here used Home Depot to reface kitchen cabinets? We're looking at renovation options and were wondering if anyone has used them for refacing. So, any opinions or advice out there in the CB?

Thanks in advance! :teeth:

I know of a friend that had her cabinets refaced but not by Home Depot. They look great and it took almost no time to get them done.

Rarely is Home Depot the cheapest place to get services like this done as they just farm it out to whoever they're contracting with. You might want to check independent resurfacing contractors yourself so you're dealing directly with whoever's doing the work. Get references and actually call them yourself, see what they have to say.

I actually worked for the company Home Depot uses for their cabinet refacing program for a brief period last year. It's a one-call close environment, so be prepared to make a decision the day of the sales pitch.

Cabinet refacing works best with certain conditions. Are you happy with the current layout of your kitchen? Are your cabinets in good shape? If it's yes to both, then refacing is an option.

Completely replacing the cabinets might change the footprint on the floor, making new flooring necessary, and would also involve getting a new countertop. Refacing can be done without affecting the flooring or countertop, and is less disruptive than replacing.

One good thing about HD is that their salespeople offer one price and that's it. No haggling, no dropping the price (unless it's a change in material) to make the sale that day. The "be-back-in-touch" rate in that industry is very low. They will go back out -- I even remember going back out to one customer's home who called back, and was told that was the only time anyone in this area's ever heard of that happening -- but they don't like to since it means two trips for one customer instead of seeing another customer and a chance at an additional sale. I do know from personal experience that HD's prices are cheaper than those from another national retailer's, but not sure how they're going to compare with the local contractors.

I don't know about HD, but we had our cabinets done and loved it. WE had a home from the 50's with yellow metal cabinets! They were solid as only they built them 50 years ago so we had dark cherry faces put on and a new counter and it was beautiful. When we sold it the realtor couldn't believe it was only faces. The price difference of course was amazing from new to recover and no one could tell anyway.

Can someone explain the refacing concept to me? I never understood all that is involved. I have white cabinets - but they're of a material called MWF...or something like that. Like a fiber board with a glossy coating. Can these be refaced and what exactly is refaced?

Basically they reface by putting new veneer and doors on existing cabinets so you can change the look of your kitchen without replacing cabinets. The price difference can be 1/4-1/2 the price of new cabinets.
