....why you should NEVER pre-judge a student:
.....okay, so, as you all know, we had our Back-to-School last night.....turns out, one of the parents that I saw was NOT a set of parents, but instead, a GRANDMOTHER and step-grandfather....their grandson is a slightly shorter-than-average ADORABLE 6th-grader who is, at times, a bit rambunctious, but never disrespectful. Sometimes he tries to be the 'life-of-the-party' or the social butterfly of this particular class, but all-in-all, not a bad kid - definitely potential [with MATH, anyway..]. This week he's been sorta on the quiet side, so I expressed this to the grandmother. I didn't want to pry into his personal life and said so. However, I guess she felt comfortable with me and decided to let me in on some of his home 'background' [...here's the part where you can go get a box of Kleenex...]. It seems that his father abandoned him when he was only 6 years old. he didn't want anything to do with him, and has decided to 'move on' and start again with a brand new family....5 years ago, around this time of the year, his mother (the grandmother's daughter) was killed in a car accident. She took him in and wound up marrying the fellow she is with now, whom she met again through her daughter's diligence and searching for him on the internet [BTW ~ the daughter died a week later! ] and the grandmother says that he gets very melancholy around the holidays...what a lot for an 11-year-old to have to go through in such a short life! Thanks goodness for his grandmother.......sorry to be such a 'downer', but I thought I should share this with you....
