Holy Greece....

I just cancelled my Greek Isles cruise with NCL, but it was an 11 night in August 2020. For 5 of us in an oceanview, the cost was about $5,000 USD. Total. I see in the quotes thread that the per person fare is $5,500 for an oceanview with DCL!! (I'm sure lower for 3/4/5th passenger but....) Yiiiiiikes.

Dang! We are 5 (3 adults, 2 kids) and I was looking at the 6/19 sailing...I think I'll prob end up with Plan B to Australia which will prob be cheaper, lol!

You could island hop for the entire summer in Greece and still spend less!

Yes, exactly this. We did 3 weeks in Greece two years ago - 5 star hotels, private drivers and guides, private boat excursions, drove all over mainland Greece, island hopped to Crete and Santorini - for about the cost of the verandah listed in PP's post.

Sounds amazing! Did you plan this yourself or use a TA?

I was looking at the Disney Cruise Line Blog where he lists pricing for each cruise in the new release for 2 adults by category (thanks @o&smom for the heads up about that terrific resource on another thread!). It's very interesting to see the prices listed like that chronologically.

Admittedly, we haven't seriously looked at a Disney cruise in few years, but the call of the Mouse is strong and we're thinking about hopping back on board in the next year or two. It was pretty surprising to me just how much less the prices are even just moving to May or Sep. I get it. School is in session most places, but the price difference (especially on some of the more expensive itineraries) is pretty startling. I can't believe I'm saying this, but some of those prices for May/Sep don't look half bad. Or maybe I've just become desensitized to Disney pricing? :rotfl2:

Yes, desensitized is the word. We are doing WBPC in about a week, and we probably would skip a year until 2022, but DS is graduating next year. We have promised a Disney Cruise. His favorite ship is the Fantasy, and we are looking at an Eastern Car because of the extra sea day. I did some computing last night based on current cruise rates and was hoping for somewhere in the 7k range. Based on what I ddid today it is more like $8379. The same cruise we did last summer (W Europe) would be around $8937 in an inside stateroom. So, see, it is not that bad then for $8379 in a deluxe family oceanview...right? I wish we could go in off season.

Off season is the key when it comes to Disney. I'm really glad that we managed to sail with them in the summer the four times we did with our son - but that was quite a few years ago. Prices were high even then, but nothing like what they are now. Fortunately, there are still some deals to be had in the off season. We are eying the 2021 WBTA which won't come out until the next release. But the price of the EBTA just released gives me hope that my husband won't laugh in my face when I show him the price 😎.

I miss the good old days when the economy sucked. :) Our first cruise in 2010 was a 10 day Med and it was $999 per person for my husband and I and only a couple hundred for each of our kids. So glad we did not pass that up, but it started the addiction that will soon make us platinum. Our Alask Cruise in 2011 was only $4200 or $4800 with the Fantasy the following April being the other one of those prices for our family of four. We even got upgraded to a Veranda for free on the Fantasy from Oceanview!

I can’t justify paying those kind of fares for a med cruise, especially with declining service overall. I love DCL but I am willing to not do these itineraries and try a different cruise line. They are so Port intensive that you don’t get the true value for what you are paying for. For us, it’s time to move on. 😥

That is EXACTLY what I told my husband. You are never on the ship in the Med, except to eat dinner and sleep. You’re so drained by the 10 hour excursion days. It’s not worth paying the DCL premium. We were perfectly happy with the NCL Epic and the $4000 price tag for 3 people on a balcony. I almost choked when I saw the $17000 tag for the same thing on DCL.

Think of how many more cruises you can do with the savings $$$$$$$

You could do a B2B2B all over Europe for the same price.

I planned it on my own after doing a TON of research. We were actually going to book through ABD, but when I started reading up on Greece, I realized there was so much more to see, so I just did it on my own. There are so many amazing, very professional Greek tour companies not only on the mainland, but on the islands as well. Once I figured out who to hire for the touring portions, it was quite easy to put the hotels and internal flights/ferries together (the ferries, especially, were a lot of fun). Greece has tourism down to a science and all tour guides at the archaeological sites have to be credentialed so they really, really know their stuff. Doing it ourselves also gave us the freedom to go off the beaten track and we met amazing people and found incredible restaurants. I would go back in a heartbeat, explore more of the mainland and do some more island hopping. It is a truly, magical place.

We have an 11 night Greek cruised on another line this summer. Suite with separate bedroom, concierge, butler, drink package, specialty dining, exclusive bar, pool, sun deck and restaurant for guests in our room category. About $14k for 3 of us. We love Disney but simply couldn’t justify the extra cost.

What cruise are you booked on? We are interested in considering other cruise lines for this sailing. TIA

This sounds so amazing! I so want to do this! Which islands did you go to and how long did you go for? :)

Norwegian Cruise Line. We are platinum but just couldn’t justify the crazy prices. We have two sea days so it’s more about the destination than the ship. Our son will be 15 and it will be nice for him to have his own sleeping space. We aren’t convinced that the activities onboard will measure up but we‘re prepared for that. I am also looking forward to having breakfasts in our room while getting ready and the occasional dinner after a long port day. I’m not sure how a regular room would compare but I’m sure the Haven will be wonderful.

Sounds like NCL in the Haven, @Chiasgirl?

Yep! Have you experienced it yet? If so, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
