Looking at air out of PA - November 15th - $700 plus per person RT - outrageous!! Looks like we're gonna be making the LONG drive...that is unless you all have some tips I am missing!!!

You didn't say which airport in PA you'd be using but have you looked at other nearby airports?

Where in PA?? I just got a cheap flight for January out of Harrisburg airport using Frontier airlines

I live closest to the Wilkes Barre Scranton (AVP) airport but never fly out of there because of high prices.

I would be willing to drive to Harrisburgh, Philadelphia, Allentown if the price was right :)

we quit flying and took up driving a few years ago.. its about $1800.00 in savings to drive and I prefer having a car there instead of using the bus system.. so more money to eat and I get to drive.. :)

Check into southwest out of PHL, depending on your flexibility one way to Orlando is as low as $140pp. "Wanna get away" fares can't be beat

I'm trying to get there from the DC area at the end of March and I am appalled, too.

Depending on your dates in November, Allegiant has some decent prices from both Harrisburg and Allentown.

I actually am seeing some decent rates as you mentioned, I just don't know about flying into Sanford - how is it? Is renting a car my only option? Two weeks for a car rental is $$$$$ and I won't use a car at all while there.

Philadelphia is not really a low fare airport especially with Southwest diminishing presence there. Drive to Baltimore.

I'm flying Allegiant AVP direct flight the last week of October. Rate was $68.00 each leg, baggage $19 check bag @40lbs, $14? For stowed on board bag, back pack is free.
It came to round trip less then $200 RT with baggage. I did decide to take the earlier flight down out of ABE, it leaves at 10 AM-ish as opposed to the evening flight out of AVP. The return flight is around 3:30PM to AVP.

I imagine that is the return flight after dropping the Sanford flight. Yes it does fly to Sanford....but, I like the smaller airports of ABE, AVP and SFB.
I rent a car, it's always been under $200 and never had an issue getting to and from the airport. There is a car service you can book on the Allegiant website but I never used them.

The only thing is if this is a holiday week, maybe rates re high based on demand.

Okay, thanks Lady, Now I see you're posting here and on my other post also. This is so helpful. I will look further into the options. So, when you fly into Sanford, what is it again that you do? Rent the car and keep it for the week or rent the car and drop it off? I am staying for 2 weeks so I don't really want to keep and pay for a car that I will never use but of course would need the car to get back to Sanford to fly home. Thanks for all of your help!!!!

:goodvibes

We use Allegiant from ABE-SFB a few times a year. If its just one person we use the Allegiant shuttle which is $62RT. You can book that on the Allegiant website when purchasing your tickets. If more than 1 person we use a car service which runs around $200RT. Renting a car just for the days you fly in & out is also an option. It still comes out cheaper than other carriers into MCO with free ME for us.

Last Nov. prices for SW were higher then we wanted it to be. So we flew in to Tampa for 124.00 and rented a car. Still much cheaper then flying into Orlando.

We go a week and rent a car, but if you are watching the cost and the amount for two weeks will be high, or there is a transfer service that would be a lot less. TaraPa posted above and I know she uses a car service. The other option may be a bit costly but rent and return to the Car Care Center on property. Then you could either rent going back or get the car service.

The other option, I would actually if close enough go to AVP and purchase the tickets. Right now they fly Thursday and Sunday I think in the AM so you need to go up then. If they are fling out, sit tight til they get the flyers out of the way and the gang is very helpful.
They can explain the cost of the shuttle they have on the website, but don't book a Rental car through them. You can always find a better rate on your own. But, I think the car service Tara pa uses may be your best bet.

Don't forget, in the Fall the flights are Monday and Friday one flight a day. The flight Friday was at 5:30 ish. PM. That is why we are going out of ABE, but flying back to AVP. The flight returning to ABE is crazy early, that is why the AVP arriving 5:15pm.

A heads up, you can't book a round trip two different airports on the website, you may have to either book each one separate, or go to the airport. It's a short flight, coming home were back in 2 hrs 15 min. Get a drink at the fountain or buy a water bottle after security, they charge for drinks or snacks. They also charge for seating, but if you reserve at the airport maybe they can help with little ones.
