Hollywood Sign

Staying near DL..taking a day and going to Universal...would like to take the kids to see the Hollywood sign on the hill on the way to Universal (is it on the way?)...is it far out of the way? Anyone help with directions?..Thanks

You will easily see it since you'll be passing under it on the way to Universal Studios. Take the 5 fwy north to the 101 north, and you'll see the Hollywood sign, pass by Capital Records (the cylinder building - you see it in movies), the sign for the Hollywood Bowl, the hospital from the soap opera General Hospital, Ambassador Hotel, where Senator Kennedy was shot in '68 ...

Be sure you don't miss it from the Freeway though! What I mean is that you could be admiring the Capitol Records building on one side while the other side is the Hollywood sign. If there is no traffic that day on the 101 Freeway, you might just miss it. There's also a huge wall they built that can block your view.

BTW, you cannot just go up to the Hollywood Sign. It's all hills. You can try to go up to the Griffith Observatory and see Los Angeles from there. It's breathtaking at Sunset.

You can find it by having a look at the link in my post under "Maps and Aerial Shots", the sticky thread at the top of this forum. Just use the zoom bar on the left. That will give you an idea of the general area, but I don't think you can get right up to it, as missmulan said.

We visited Universal and wanted to go see the Hollywood sign. This is the directions they gave us at Universal. Take the 101 south to Gower make a left to Franklin make a right and then make a Left on Beachwood. You can see it behind the houses.
