I'm taking DD12 to Disneyland in a couple weeks and plan to do a "LA" day - Venice beach, CA Science Center, Griffith Observatory - and then do Universal the next day with a late night of driving home (Northern CA). I needed a hotel central the the LA stuff, and close to Universal that wouldn't break the bank, and found Hollywood Celebrity Hotel which is awesomely to the walk of fame. I booked but am still feeling a bit anxious. It's just us girls.

Reviews looked good but can anyone offer more info on the hotel or the area? And the map says 10 min to Universal, but how long is really going to take on a Wednesday morning (park opens at 8am)?

We go to the El Capitan fairly regularly and while I haven't seen this hotel it is in a great location. It should be pretty safe based on the closeness to the Lowe's and the Chinese theater. The area in front of Hollywood & Highland does get crowded with obnoxious people in costume wanting to charge you for pictures with them but they can be avoided/ignored. I might invest in a pick-pocket proof purse though ( pacsafe makes good ones ). The Metro Red Line goes from Hollywood & Highland to Universal in 10 min but them it's another 10 min walk to the Studios - but if metro takes 10 min it's going to take 15 by car I'd think. I'd allow more like 30 because traffic is so unpredictable and then you should have time to park and walk to the gate - which is a bit of a walk thru Universal Citywalk - and get there for rope drop.

10 min is about right. It's not even 7 miles to USH.

My area! I'm on Sycamore - two blocks from Orchid. Safe area, considered Hollywood Hills West, and super easy to get to the Hollywood tourists spots. If you're driving/ubering to Universal (your driver probably knows) but avoid the 101-N freeway and follow Highland as it veers to the left. Take that all the way up until you reach the Universal City sign. (Forgot the street, but it's a huge sign you can't miss it) and you turn in there and there are directions to get into the park. If I'm not mistaken, when you turn into the Universal City area, go straight until there's a light, to the left of the light is Universal Station redline stop and then there's the entrance to the parking for US. Could be wrong though. Hope that helps! It avoids the early morning rush, and I've taken that way to work plenty of times, it's not bad.

In my experience taking Cahuengua (Highland as it veers to the left) takes longer.
As it reaches the Universal City sign you have to cross Barham and in the morning
the traffic really builds up there. The 101 north is going against traffic in the
morning so it's not busy at all. These days as you cross Barham the name of
the street changes to W.C. Fields Dr. and it veers right directly into the Curious
George parking structure.

Either way you're looking at 10 to 12 minutes. 15 at the most.
