Holding points loophole still available?

Bumping this because I have some points in holding and an upcoming stay. When I am in the 60 day window of the reservation that was already booked a while ago, do I call MS to ask them to switch the points? I was thinking I could cancel and rebook immediately online, but that's risky.

You don’t need to cancel and rebook and you don’t need to call. You can use the “modify” reservation function, just select the same exact dates and room type, and change which points you are using.

Interestingly, I tried to use the "modify" trick yesterday on an upcoming Aulani stay (within 60 days) to swap in 18 of my points in holding (16 of which were tied to a Riviera contract, 2 of which were OTU points). I couldn't do it online as my BLT contract was "locked" at the top and therefore it wouldn't pick up the points in holding listed second and third. (The BLT contract shouldn't have been locked, as I didn't use it for home resort 11 month booking for Aulani, obviously.)

I thought I'd be out of luck given MS sometimes refuses to change it for you, but I chatted with a nice CM from MS who very quickly swapped in my holding points, freeing up 18 points that I could bank into 2025.

YMMV, but thought it was interesting that I could chat to get it done. I'd read anecdotes that sometimes MS on the phone won't do it for you, so always best to try it online myself first. But if it won't let you for some reason, always worth a chat/phone call.

I’ve noticed that “locked” bug before and i think it occurs when you book something that is partially within and partially outside the 7 month window, using the fact that you are allowed to book at 7 months plus 7 days so long as the first date is within 7 months.

I have it happen anytime I modify a home resort booking to something else, even if it well within the 7 month mark.

So, I think you are right it has to do with the home resort booking in some way.

I think I recall reading on these boards that an Aulani to WDW reservation, or a WDW reservation to CA resorts/Aulani cannot be modified online and requires a call to guest services to do. I wonder if that is why you are unable to do the modify "trick" on your reservation ...since it's Aulani.

I never had a BLT reservation, though. It was always an Aulani reservation, just modifying the type of points used. I was able to modify the dates of the reservation previously using WDW home resort points with no issue.

I have points that I borrowed for January. My UY in Feb. My flights got changed and was thinking of moving my extra day from the beginning of the trip to the end of the trip. Trip is end of Jan into Feb so I have 34 points I borrowed that I would now need to put back to use Feb 2nd. Is this possible?

Figured. When Tower opened for booking my wife had them borrow from 2026 UY for 2025 but then I had her cancel that before she was off the phone with them. The points were borrowed from account because I saw online but they put them back. Wasn't sure if there is exceptions or if it was just because she was still on the phone with them.
