Holding points after swapping points out on same reservation??

I have Aulani and Vero points on an August use year. I have a reservation coming up in a few weeks at AKL that was booked using my Aulani points. I decided to save the Aulani points for next year, so I kept the same AKL booking but modified it to use my Vero points (borrowed from 8/2020 use year) instead.

Now that I’ve done that, the Aulani points are showing as in holding...which I had thought would only happen if I canceled a reservation. Didn’t expect it merely for swapping points out. I tried swapping them back, but doesn’t help because then the Vero points show as in holding.

Any ideas on how to handle? If I call member services and explain, any chance they would take them out of holding? I def don’t want or need to take an extra trip on 30 days notice between now and July...anything else I can do? Thanks!

The 30-day rule is not limited to canceling reservations. Any attempt, 30 days or fewer out from date of arrival, to change points in the reservation will result in all points coming out of the reservation being put in holding.

You might call MS to see if you can get any relief by explaining you did not understand that the rule applied to your change, but their is no assurance anything will be done.

It can’t hurt to call MS and explain what happened. But, any change in points within 31 days will put them into holding.

When you made the switch, you technically canceled the use of those points.

With holding, it is reservations with 60 days of check in, not 30, if there isnt anything that can be done,

I will say, though, that I made the same mistake in November and when I called, they couldn’t do anything to help. Luckily, I had a January and a March reservation and, i was very lucky that the first two nights of my January trip showed up at 60 day. I booked using holding points and then was able to cancel the original ones.

Good luck!

FYI this is also an issue if you have a waitlist that is for fewer points than your current reservation and you keep the waitlist active within 30 days of the trip. If the waitlist is successful, your points that you saved would go into holding.

Separate question. If Ms can't help, can held points be deposited to rci?

Because they can't be deposited without an actual booking? I've never been clear if DVC points can just be deposited in some way. Otherwise holding points can be used in the World Collection which is RCI.
Points can be deposited without a booking to extend their useful life. But holding points cannot be deposited in a way to extend their life.

It is a work around to having forgotten to bank, but not to holding.

The rules do allow booking RCI though.

A little strange to me that you can deposit to make up for not banking which otherwise are restricted points (expire in 4 months) but that holding has the additional restriction.

Another option is that holding points can be transferred but they do retain their holding status. I thought they could only be transferred if they were otherwise current points but I don't see that listed as a requirement on the DVC information on holding points - just that points in holding can be transferred.

Follow-up: I called MS, explained the situation, and they took the points out of holding. Said they wouldn't always be able to do that but they'd do it this time. Had to do it manually, so it took a few days.

I'm glad MS was able to help you out. I'm also glad you posted this because I was not aware and could have made this mistake myself one day! Thanks!
