Holding Delta tickets? Here's what happens if they strike/close down.

Because of the uncertainties about a possible strike at Delta, which most experts believe would lead to a total shutdown of Delta within 24-48 hours, I have been doing a lot of research in the past week about what will happen to ticket holders if Delta goes belly-up.

The news is mostly bad, I'm afraid, but not hopeless.

If you are holding Delta tickets and the pilots are on strike but the airline has not yet shut down and you are traveling at that time, you'll need to go to a Delta ticket counter and get your tickets signed over to another airline that flies the same route. Based on past strikes, expect very long lines and lots of confusion. No other airline has any obligation to help you directly at all. If you don't want to fool with this process, you'll just have to buy a new ticket on another airline.

However, the likelihood is that Delta will shut down within 48 hours if there is a strike. If the airline actually ceases operations, everything changes:

* If you are holding Delta-issued tickets (even if they are on another airline), if Delta shuts down those tickets are no longer valid. However, any US airline that operates on the same route is required by law to honor your "confirmed" ticket (paid or frequent flyer award, doesn't matter) on a "space available" (standby) basis, for a fee not to exceed $50 each way.

* You will have 60 days after a shutdown to arrange for alternate transportation on a US carrier that covers the same route. The reality is, this will be tough. Since you have to fly standby on the other carrier, you will be last priority and can be "bumped" repeatedly. In the past, when Pan Am and Eastern went out of business, many people who were in the middle of traveling were stranded for days or longer.

* If you want further, official information, here is the DOT's most recent publication on the subject of the airlines' obligations to honor tickets issued by bankrupt airlines:

http://airconsumer.ost.dot.gov/rules/Section 145Guidance2005June.doc

It's very detailed and includes a 13-page Q&A section addressing many different scenarios.

* International carriers have NO obligation to honor tickets issued by any shut down US airline, even if the tickets were issued for that international carrier's flights. (For instance, if you have Delta-issued tickets on Alitalia, Alitalia does not have to honor those tickets once Delta shuts down.)

* Skymiles (Delta frequent flyer miles) will be worthless if Delta shuts down, unless another carrier buys Delta and chooses to take those miles over. Based on what happened when Pan Am shut down, this is unlikely.

If you are debating whether to purchase Delta tickets right now, here is an article that I think makes a pretty persuasive argument against it:

http://www.hasbrouck.org/articles/bankruptcy.html

The article above is also extremely informative about airline bankruptcy in general.

Not trying to scare anyone -- just want you to know the facts so that you can make alternate arrangements if necessary. Hopefully there will not be a strike and 50,000 Delta employees won't lose their jobs!

By the way, if the airline shuts down and you are forced to try arranging transportation with another carrier on a standby basis, they are only required to help you IF you have PROOF of a confirmed ticket.

For that reason, be SURE you have a printout of your e-ticket RECEIPT (not the itinerary). That, or an actual paper ticket, is the only proof the other airlines have to accept. If you haven't printed out e-ticket receipts for upcoming Delta flights, do it now!

wow thanks so much!! I think i am going to try and make other arrangements instead of sit it out. This is going to be so frustrating for me.I have my entire 2 week trip paid for already.Passes, hotels, rental car, gift certificates to restaurants and 1,000 spending money. It is going to kill me but i am very nervous about just sitting and waiting on delta. :guilty:

Thanks for the info, Mary and everyone----

Sending good vibes and prayers to all fellow Delta ticket holders...we leave on April 14th :bitelip: I guess there could be worse things than getting stranded in FL!
As a union person, I send best wishes to all Delta employees for a positive outcome!

Thank you Mary for outlining that so clearly. My flights are not till December and I am worried too.

We are going down to Disney via Song on 4/27 and back on Delta 5/6 (well, crossing our fingers). How do I print my e-ticket for our flights (mentioned in one of the posts above)? Also, my flight arrival times keep changing by a few minutes and our seats are unassigned each time. Do I need to reprint my e-ticket each time there is a change?

Thanks!!

We booked everything through Disney travel, including our air tickets. We don't have any type of receipt, so what are our options? I called Disney and the only thing they said is that in the worst case they would find us airfare. I am confused by this, do they just rebook everything, do we have extra costs? Thanks for all help!

They should have mailed or e-mailed the receipt to you when you bought the ticket. If you got it in the mail, you're all set. If you got it in e-mail, find the e-mail and print it out. If you don't have either one, go to www.delta.com, log in and click on "Itineraries & Check-in" to pull it up.

In every case, be sure that what you have printed says "Your Receipt and Itinerary" at the top. If it just says "Your Itinerary," that is NOT the proof you need. You need something that says "receipt."

You should always have e-ticket receipts with you when you travel.

April 18th is the set strike date.

We booked a rental car (SUV) today. If they strike, we're going to drive down. We booked it now 'cause we figure everyone will be scrambling for cars/flights at the last minute once they strike. We have two little kids and I'd rather try driving with them (they're good travellers) than waiting standby in an airport.

We also book everything through disney, I have my receipt but they don`t list the amount paid for airfare seperately, should I call and ask for a receipt thats shows how much was for flights?
Also I called disney and got a really helpful CM, but after checking into who would have to rebook us on another airliine them or us, He came back and said
that their air help people, were unsure as this hasn`t happened in a while. So I called delta and got a rep that Seem very confused, But said that everything would have to go through disney (which is what I thought). The only good news I got was that disney would allow us to change the dates of the hotel and park tickets portion of the package.
Which raises another question in my mind, if there will end up being a ton of people calling the other airlines to get switched, and I have to go through disney to switch do I end up with less of a chance to get one of the open seats on the other airlines? ( I`m just imagining a few disney reps trying to rebook everyone who they booked delta on.) :confused3

April 18? Is this confirmed?
Yep-there's another thread about this with a link. Walk off April 17th, first day of strike April 18th if there's no agreement and contracts are tossed.

But I just wanted t add:
Also I asked the delta rep for the reservation number so iI could pull up the itinerary at delta.com and keep an eye on it, he said I didn`t have one? and that I could speak with internet customer service about where to go on the website to find itinerarys ,I know where to go, but it asks for a 6 digits reseravtion number, so should I have one even I booked through disney or not?

We too are in this boat, its too bad that Disney won't let us just rebook now. I figure that if this happens I will try to pull up flight schedules on the computer while I am on the phone, maybe with two people searching it will help. I do know that according to Disney our group of 11 will probably be seperated. I was also told that I would have to wait for Disney to call me, I only hope that I am home when all this happens otherwise, I am just sol.

How does travel insurance play into this?? I just checked expedia to see what other flights are available from NY to Nas and the only flights available are about 500 a person and take about 22hrs flight time. I paid a lot of money for the hotel already...we i be covered taking travel insurance? And when are they meeting again? Is there much hope they wont strike?? --A Very Nervous Flyer!!

If you booked air through Disney, you'll have to work things out through Disney. I'm sure they aren't going to do anything until/unless there is an actual strike or shutdown. At that point it's hard to say what Disney will do. I'm guessing they will probably rebook you on another airline, purely as a public relations gesture. I have a feeling they are technically acting as an agent for the airline, so they probably aren't legally responsible to do anything for you.

Trip insurance usually won't cover bankrupt travel suppliers.

We have disney travel insurance and it states that strikes are not covered , I would assume most policys would be the same.

Like you, I elected to purchase Disney travel insurance and am booked to fly on Delta April 28th. To quote my policy, it states under the heading TRIP CANCELLATION AND INTERRUPTION "This coverage does not cover loss caused by: (i) carrier-caused delays including an announced , organized, sanctioned labor union Strike that affects public transportation, unless the Insured's coverage effective date is prior to when a strike is forseeable. A Strike is forseeable on the date the labor union members vote to approve a Strike."

I just spoke with a travel insurance specialist who indicated that, since I paid booked and paid for my trip/airfare prior to the strike vote yesterday, any ramifications of a Delta strike would be covered. He assured me a travel specialist would find a comparable flight for April 28th should Delta be inoperable. I fervently want to believe the specialist with whom I spoke as this will be our first trip to Disney . . .

I was told the same thing to the most part from Disney when I called them today. My question if they can find a comparable flight, then who would pay the difference? I wasn't told we would have too, but I can't believe that Disney would pay for that....

I paid for my airfare for December on Delta.

They changed my flights. I have the new itinerary and the origianl e-tickets.... but the flights changed since I printed the origianl ones.

What should I do to print these new tickets with the new flight numbers?
