I can't believe this happened to me!

I have baby fever....BAD. I have a 9 1/2year old DD and I am almost 44 and I have accepted that one is all I am going to get.

That doesn't stop me from practically drooling over babies from a distance. I can't tell you the last time I held an infant until.....

I am sitting in a BAR with my DBF. It's a small local place and I know a lot of people in there. We are regulars. I woman that I have never seen before came in with an infant just a few days old. I kind of thought that was weird but she knew the bartender and I guess she wanted to show her the baby.

I was doing my regular drooling thing and asked her how old her was and what she named him. That was when she HANDED him to me.

I sat on a barstool for about 10 minutes holding a strangers 7 day old infant. I found it pretty shocking but I wasn't going to look a gift horse in the mouth.

So I got to hold a baby.....but I still think that it was quite trusting to let a total stranger hold your infant.

I find it more weird to take a newborn baby into a loud smokey bar.

Especially one sitting in a bar

I don't know which is weirder, the fact this person dragged her baby into a bar or the fact she handed the baby to a stranger. Poor kid, life won't be easy if this is the way things are starting out.

Oh good lord, she went into a bar to show a friend her newborn. I don't recall the OP saying the mom propped her up on the stool so she could do a few shots and smoke a few cigarettes

Its also illegal to smoke in bars here in NY also.

I don't think either thing is all that weird, to be honest.

The term "smoky bar" would never even enter my thought process, because it's been illegal to smoke in bars here for years.

But it does remind me of that line in Sweet Home Alabama... 'You have a baby! In a bar!' For some reason, that line cracks me up.

I don't really frequent bars anymore so I have no idea of their current conditions and can't comment on that, but I seem to be a baby magnet everywhere else. Random women ask me to hold babies in airports, supermarket checkouts, restaurants. I love holding babies and do it with pleasure. I must look particularly motherly. So not, I don't think it is strange.

Different strokes for different folks... just not something I would ever even dream of doing... not with a newborn, not with a toddler, not with a tween, not with a teen, just not. When people wanted to see my new baby I had them to my home... I know, I'm just crazy like that.

I would have enjoyed holding the baby also. My family is complete - but I still have that baby urge now and then. I think holding a newborn would really have me going for a few days!

Exactly. And the OP described a local place, not Studio 54 for Christ's sake. Some people need to get over themselves.

OP glad you got a small remedy for your baby fever. I have those same feelings quite often myself.

As of 1-1-2010 there is no smoking in bars and restaurants in NC....

It was not smoky and it was a Sunday afternoon so it wasn't crowded.

When I handed the baby back to the Mom she put him back in his carrier. He was sitting on a table and the Mom went outside to smoke and asked the bartender who she knew to watch him. The bartender was working and at one point went in the back. So it was me my DBF and the baby. I joked...go get the car and lets make a run for it with him!

I felt like I should pay her :rotfl: because it was such a thrill for me.

That's exactly what I was thinking! Great line, love that movie!

I used to work at Babies R Us. I was checking out a new dad who had his baby boy with him one day. Dad realized at some point that he forgot his wallet in the car, so he says, "Here, can you hold him for a minute?" and runs out to the car to grab it. It was kind of funny, although a small part of me was hoping desperately that he didn't get in the car and make a run for it.

Another time, I was shopping in Walmart and there was a teenaged mother there with her young baby boy. Walking, but not verbal, so a year? Anyway, the baby was crying and then he looked at me and smiled. She sticks him out toward me, and I automatically reach for him, not knowing what else to do. (I was a teenager too at the time). She plunks the baby in my arms and says, "There you go. She's your mommy now." I stand there open mouthed while she walks off down the isle and turns the corner. The kid looks at me, I look at the kid, then the mom pops her head back around the corner and says, "Just kidding! Bet I scared you huh?" Takes the baby back and leaves. I'm pretty sure I just stood there for a minute thinking of all the things I should probably have done in that situation before just shaking my head and leaving the store.

Agreed! And ill add that i would have refused to hold the baby..i just aint in to that.
I'll hold MY OWN and my relatives but thats it.
I'll also not let a stranger hold mine...(of course they are 5 and 3 now)

I wouldn't call you crazy, just a bit judgemental (the bolded of your first post) and maybe a little out of touch. Not all bars are like the basement of Animal House.

I'm sorry, it is odd to leave a one week old newborn on a bar in a carrier to go have smoke. It is odd to hand a one week old newborn to a stranger to chat up your neighborhood bartender. :confused3 It seems the new mom is not accepting of the changes that come with being a new mom and perhaps was not ready to start a family yet. I won't even discuss the smoking issue.

OP - Despite it being a strange situation, I am happy you got some fun baby time. :goodvibes

Reminds me of the day I was at the post office, the woman in front of me had a package to pick up, she was holding a baby, about 6-7 mo old.
and she looked as if she was thinking, "how will I carry the package and the baby"
so I said, Oh I can help you to your car, thinking she would hand me the package,,..........she handed me the baby!! LOL, I had left my kids home with hubby, so I was very happy to carry the baby for her, it just struck me funny later, you would think she would hand over the box!:rotfl: not the baby!

I remember when my ds was little I took him into a tiny bathroom to breastfeed him. When I came out I was trying to wash my hands and some young girl said "OH can I hold him?" Now I am sure she was trying to help and be nice - but I just thought HELL NO am I handing my baby over to some lady in a NYC bathroom.

I would not have let a stranger hold my baby. I wasn't a fan of the coochie coochie coo either. I didn't want a stranger to touch her.

I remember being in a hotel restaurant and she started to fuss. One squeek and one of us wold get up and take her out. I was walking with her in the lobby and a brandmother type offered to do it for me so I could finish my dinner. The restaurant was open so I would have been able to see her. I politely declined.

I didn't understand it but I haven't held a baby in years. All of our friends either have older kids or no kids.
