Holding a place in line?

Hi!

This might be a hot-button topic, but I wanted to get some advice. I have some friends who are going to DL for one day and the Rapunzel M&G is a must-do for them. It will be a Dad, his DD5, his mom and dad. Would Dad be able to wait in line for Rapunzel while DD5 and grandma and grandpa walk around and then they could join him when he is close to the front? Or should they all be standing in line? I'm just not sure what proper line-waiting etiquette in DL would be for this situation. I know this line can be up to 2 hours long.

I for one do not believe in holding places in line for a ride, but for a M&G I think differently. For a ride, you could be holding spots for 4 other family members, for the M&G, the adult waiting is not going to do the M&G, just the child. For some reason this seems OK to me.
Others may have different opinions, but I would be curious to hear as I have a DD7 and we are going in Sep.

I don't know the proper etiquette, but I would be mad/annoyed if I was waiting with my kids and 3+ people jumped in line. Now if whole party was waiting in the line and the DD had to go to the bathroom or needed to walk out of line for a few min and one person went with her and came back in line I wouldn't care.

If one person jumps in line with their family/friends, no biggie, but I think it's rude when a bunch of people line jump.

Personally, for a M&G, I would not have a problem with it - provided only the little girl actually participates in the M&G. I would see it as the dad being a placeholder for the little girl, KWIM?

When we were getting in line for the Rapunzel M&G at WDW, the CM who was informing folks about the wait time actually suggested that we leave 1 person as a placeholder since the wait was about two hours. We didn't, but we also had the luxury of being there for a week and being able to take other opportunities to see her when the wait was shorter.

Yes, I can see that. I guess I was thinking about one adult waiting and then one child going, but if it was 6 kids or something, then it would be very irritating as I would probably have my DD wait with me anyways.

My personal feeling is that everyone should wait in line together. It's really annoying when you think there's only so many people in front of you and then next thing you know 10 people jump in line. So my view is that it's perfectly fine to take a kid out of a line for a potty break, but not really good form to save spots while others are having fun. Now, I will admit, I have done it before, no one said anything (and I don't say anything when others do it), but it felt really wrong to us and we agreed not to do it again.

That Rapunzel line is brutal. My girls really want to meet her, but we just can't justify the 90 minute wait.

I would have to agree. The inhumanely long line for Rapunzel would have to be an exception to my usual "kids need to learn how to wait for things" rule.

I am actually not even telling my little girl that Rapunzel is at DLR. She has met her several times at WDW and I feel like our limited time at DLR would be put to better use! We are going to do the Merida M&G though, since she's not done that before.

Just wait in line like the majority of us do. Period.

Heck, I would love to walk around the Parks and have someone WAIT IN THE LINE for me and when it gets close to the front JUMP IN …

Let me tell you it is completely aggravating to the rest of us waiting in the LONG line to see this happen.

For very young children and potty breaks, a person as a placeholder makes sense to me. I would far rather you take your 2YO off to wander a grassy area or something than force them to stand screaming in a long line. I don't expect a small child to have unlimited line-waiting patience. While that can vary by child and some are okay with that, the vast majority don't have that kind of patience. For them, 1 hour literally is forever.

Place holding and then a bunch of teens come up and cut in front of you to someone going "dude, that was soooo cool! you'll have to ride that." Yeah, that would (and has) tick me off.

MHO .. a line is a line. Period.

M&G or a RIDE … no difference.

People do not like line jumpers. I see it often. It sets up for the people BEHIND the line jumper to be very aggravated.

NOW if DISNEY had a DISCLAIMER during an M&G that states LINE JUMPING IS APPROVED HERE … then by all means go for it and those waiting will see the sign and realize this is ALLOWABLE.

What are the CHANCES DL will be putting up those signs ANYTIME soon?

Now if all 4 people wanted their time with the characters and pictures and such then yea, that would be annoying. And we did the Rapunzel line at WDW last May and we were also informed by a CM to leave one person and come back. The wait was 2.5 hours and we did just that. We took turns waiting(it was just me, my husband and daughter) but everyone around us did the same thing, probably because the CM told us it was ok. I would be mad though had it been an actual ride where seats were taken.

But if MOST standing in line are not aware of DL or CM stating only one need wait … well it does upset people.

I have witnessed CM's encouraging to have one person be a placeholder when the M&G lines are especially long.

I disspise line jumping also, but I guess look at M&G a little differently than a show or attraction....Probably why I now avoid M&G like the plague...the lines move soooo slow.

I been in businesses that have signs for everything, right down to how to use the toilet and wash your hands. It is quite annoying and unprofessional. I think Disney currently does a nice job of balancing park regulations with common sense.

Its annoying and unprofessional to have signs?

Let me tell you, I am at DL all.of.the.time. People need to be informed of what is and what is not acceptable. Period.

When CM's tell a select few what they can do while others are not aware it sets up for very upset Park guests.

I was quite annoyed after standing in line for 90 minutes to see Rapunzel (with my 6 & 8 yr olds) to find that they lady in front of us let someone else take her kids and do rides because "there was just no way they could stand in this line". Her kids were older than mine! My children did as was expected and stood in the insane line and the other kids went and had fun. Not only that but then they got to see Flynn and we didn't because he left right after them. That would not have been as annoying if they had all stood in line like we did.

I could see if a child had to leave a M&G line to go to the restroom, but these kids did not stand in the line ever!

Yes, it's a VERY hot-button issue here on DIS.

The very simple answer to your question is that there is no general agreement on line-waiting etiquette. Assess the situation and do what you feel is appropriate and what you would want the person in front of you to do.
