HOJO Connecting Rooms

I know that they won't guarantee connecting rooms at time of reservation, but are there any tips or tricks for increasing the likelihood? Is there a best time to call or check in, or is it just random?

Every time we have stayed in the 2 story buildings we have gotten the adjoining rooms we requested.
