Hockey or Baseball which is the better sport

I will go to a basebal game if I was out drinking with the guys the night before atleast I will be able to get some sleep in the warm sun for the afternoon. ;)

The American Pastime is definately the better sport to watch. Football (soccer ) is definately the best sport to watch though.

Baseball, there is more excitement in baseball even when they are "standing around". You just have to understand the game more.

I get bored waiting for the hockey game to start between the boxing.

I dont play either, but to watch...definitely HOCKEY, no question about it! ;)
Baseball is sooo boring and slow...hockey is fast and exciting.

Best fan it could have been there had they not removed it

I think it's kind of like comparing apples and oranges.

Hockey--wintertime sport, very fast moving, very specific skill set and talent required, not everyone can play (even recreationally)

Baseball--summertime passtime, a bit slow moving, again, a specific skill set, but MANY more people can play. Not sure about our Canadian friends, but virtually everyone I know played some sort of baseball hybrid (wiffleball, stickball, tball, little league, softball) growing up.

So, as I park myself firmly ON the fence, I will say they both have their strengths and weaknesses, but for me, I would rather watch baseball.

Thanks debster I played ball when I was yonger and let me tell you it took alot less skill to do that then it did to play hockey and I think that is why more people play baseball recrationaly anyhow I can say at a higher level it takes alot more skill to play baseball well but I still find it boring.

I pick hockey, no question in my mind. It's a much faster sport, and usually a lot more exciting (although, I'll admit that some teams play a very boring, non-offensive style of game, which leads to a boring game)

For those that criticize hockey for having too much fighting, try and make your way to a college hockey game. Fighting's not allowed in college hockey, you fight and you'll get thrown out for the rest of that game, plus your next game, whereas in the pros, you fight, you sit for 5 minutes, and then you can come back in the same game.

I've got a friend who's a radio broadcaster, and he's done both hockey and baseball. He says the big difference is with hockey, you have to choose your words carefully in order to be able to describe the action, with baseball, you need to be as verbose and long-winded as possible to fill all the time, or give meaningless statistics. Someone else described baseball as "5 minutes of action spread out over 3 hours"

(example statistic: "Pedro Martinez has struck out 20 of the last 30 right handed batters who wear Nike batting gloves that he's faced on cloudy tuesdays in June while playing on astroturf fields") (note: I have no idea if this statistic is true, but it's the sort of thing that I've heard from some baseball announcers)

(for those who can't skate, Lacrosse is a sport that's very similar to hockey, but can be played on land)

Yep with hockey there is always lots of action for the announcers to talk about beit hits goals fights penaties etc.

At least Pedro Martinez(okay, I'm a red sox fan BIG TIME and even I know Pedro's not doing so hot) or any other pitcher or any player really, has some sort of talent. Excuse me, but you've been bashing baseball for long enough, in hockey, what do they do? Ram people into the sides of the rink. Now THERE is something that takes real talent. Hitting someone, hm there is something else really hard. Baseball has no action....okay maybe if you're the goaly in hockey you have more action than the rest of them, but basically you just sit there and watch the puck go around and around the rink with an occasional whistle for icing where you have another face off...I have to agree with whoever said that I find myself getting bored between fights. Yeah watching guys lose teeth and walk of the ice bleeding is something I really want to spend my money on. Give me red sox or pats tickets ANY TIME!

And dsny fn, what is with this "hehehe" all the time. Are you 2? It's really starting to annoy me.

(flame me, I don't care!)

My hehe is in place of smiley's hehe se not a problem As for hockey you think the guys are not in shape etc and only hit people. Well as a goalie I can tell you it is tough to be a goalie but harder to be a foreward some times you have to be able to play for 20 minutes a night skating full out and getting hit. Ya hockey players go off the ice bleeding now and again and guess what they come back that same game to and continue to play you do not see that in baseball they go on the DL for hangnails and blisters as I stated before. Hockey is a very physical and physically demanding game you seem to like football is that not barbaric for you all they do is run around and hit each other.

It actually does take a lot of skill to hit someone into the boards. The other person is not going to want to stay still for you to hit them, they'll be trying to get away, you have to be able to hit them with enough force to knock them off the puck. And the whole time, you're on ice skates, which makes it a bit more difficult. I've seen guys go in for a hit, and just bounce off the other guy and fall down ... that's not what you want to have happen.

Hockey players are in constant motion, everyone on the ice, except maybe the goalie (who has his share of action too). Even the referees move around a lot. (I read somewhere that the average NHL referee will skate 7 miles during the course of the game). Being a goalie in hockey is a lot like being a catcher in baseball ... you have to have very good reflexes, be able to read your own team and the opposition, be able to react quickly to unexpected situations, and do whatever it takes to stop the puck/ball.

As far as the standing around issue ... who do you think stands around more? A left wing, or a center fielder? No flames (they're in Calgary ;) ), just an honest question.

Having tried to play hockey in my youth, I'd say it takes an enormous amount of skill. That said, I'll go baseball over hockey any day! NY Yankees!

Nice reply Syracuse it takes alot more skill to play hockey than alot of people think.jrydberg why did you give up on trying the game of hockey outof curiosity?

Why did I give up? I could skate... I could pass... I could shoot... I could take a hit... I just couldn't do all of them at once ;) Plus it was one of the more expensive sports to play as a kid.

I see your pont hehehe to funny. I agree with the cost being a factor my parents hated the fact I chose to be a goalie they loved watching me play but hated having to pay. I always has custom made equipment not you average off the shelf stuff so my equipment costs per year ran into the thousands on top of paying for the league I played in and the travel time and hotels etc for all my games. A season cost my family about 12 grand and they paid till I made it to juniour so from the age of 4 to the age of 16.

Don't play either, bu for watching, it's definitely hockey for me, no doubt about it :teeth:
I do prefer college and even local high school to professional, for the reasons Syracuse Wolverine mentioned about the fighting ::yes:: not to mention it's much more affordable to attend the games ;) But boy, I sure hate to see the Stanley Cup playoffs end...makes for a long summer!! (Note to self: get snack food for tonight's game 3...nothing like a playoff game to unwind after a day of chores!)

Methinks I will need to change my signature art...my DD will be attending UNH in the fall, HockeyEast rivals of my alma mater BC :)

I follow the Red Sox over the summer but don't get as "into" it and excited as I do about hockey.

To me, hockey is pretty much the same as soccer, basketball, lacrosse, football, etc. In all those sports, each team has a goal (net or basket etc.), and all you have to do is get the ball into the goal to score.

Baseball (and softball!) are very different from those sports, and IMO, much more exciting to watch and play.
