Hobby or obsession?

Wanted to add, one thing we were able to remove without much effort from her house were lots and lots of old photos. Photos of family members I only heard about, but never knew. Photos are the greatest collections anyone can leave behind.

I'm glad you saved the photos. We didn't find any photos in our house, so the lady's children obviously got them. We apparently are going to leave a cedar chest full of photos pre-2005 and several hard drives that begin when we bought our first digital. If there's anything that we "collect" it's photos. I've collected about 2000 in the last 2 months since I bought a digital SLR.

I used to collect My Little Ponies. I had every single one ever made. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. I fought long and hard to get every one ever created. Nothing was creepier than opening up the bedroom (yes, an entire bedroom) with all of those horses smiling and staring you dead in the eye.

I was forced to sell them because I left my ex...and I wonder what in the world I would have done with all of them now? It was a little obsessive...I mean, it was like I was trying to be back in my childhood again when I had them.

Yeesh. It was a little spooky ;)

Sorry to hijack the thread, but Stepharoonie I have to tell you, every time I see you post, I always think to myself what a GORGEOUS wedding dress you had!! You were quite a beautiful bride :)

I would second that and would add you look like my cousin Nedra.

and I too collected my little ponies.

I think there are two different types of hobbies - collecting objects, or having an interest in a particular thing. Both can be healthy or unhealthy.

I have an interest in Harry Potter - as anyone who has posted in the Burrow thread knows. I have read and re-read the books a million times and have lots of ideas about the series. I am even writing an essay for a Harry Potter website.

But I don't think I'm obsessed - because I can not think about it for months at a time, and while I do feel strongly about my book theories, I'm still aware that they are fictional stories.

There are some posters I've encountered in Harry Potter forums that I really think are obsessed. Mainly because they talk about the characters as if they were real people, and get very upset when someone points out that they are not.

Hobbies and interests are supposed to add to your life, not take it over. When it becomes all you can think about or talk about, then I think it becomes a problem. No, the obsessor isn't hurting anyone, but they are shutting themselves off from the rest of the world to live in an artificial one. And I don't think that's healthy.

Now that I've hijacked your thread...

The way you describe your grandmother's house is kind of how we bought that house - basically full of a lifetime of stuff. Furniture, dishes, food, clothes, you name it. We found toys from the 50's, LP record recordings of one of her children (now 60) singing, awards, school papers, love letters.... It was really sad to see the tangible memories of this lady's life and legacy abandoned.

My wife wrote this about it much more interestingly at the link >>>(LINK) I would paste it, but it's "longish."

I'll have to give your link a read, thanks. How is little Jane by the way? Still insane? ;)

I was susprised that my mom and aunt didn't want more than what they took, which was very little. I think my brother and I took more than they did. I have several really nice calendars, one from 1965 and another from 1937. I cannot believe the excellent condition they are in. She had a cigar box full of match covers and match boxes, all from places (restaurants/bars) in California. I tried googling them and none of them are in business anymore. What neat artwork on those things! She didn't smoke, but her boyfriend did. She was widowed in her early 30's, never re-married.

Another thing she had that I now have in my possession is a prayer card from JFK's funeral. Don't know how she got a hold of it, to my mom's knowledge she wasn't anywhere near his funeral! It's just a shame....all of these things that meant something to someone and now I have some of it in a box in my closet.

I seemed to have hijacked my own thread! :rotfl:

when the guy from Clean Sweep comes knocking on your door, it is time to let go.

I have a box of Star Wars toys up in my attic and my Deanna Troi collection is on a shelf in my bedroom. I curse her everytime I take the stuff down to dust it. But everytime my DH mentions selling it, I want to cry.

My Df is obsessed with Ebay auction sniper...he is always looking for a deal.

He has made a big mistake though and just won 2 of the same thing at $150 each!!! He tells me that's OK, that we can sell one of the things for more money...I say honey, as long as you keep sniping me jewlelry, its OK!!!!! :)

Is the JFK prayer card bordered in black with a picture of him on it? I have one of those, I think they gave them out at the Catholic churches.

Let me go and drag it out and I'll scan it! But yes, it is in black and white.

I'm still looking, and I can't locate it! It's not where I left it!

It probably was something given out at church (we are Catholic) like you mentioned because like I said, she wasn't at JFK's funeral that anyone in the family is aware of.

I did find this parking pass though which I forgot I had, it was issued for her 1947 Studebaker! Why she kept it is beyond me! It must've been a special day for her.
