I mean - I know the baby is very "safe" in there...but, having not had a child before (me personally)...I can't see this being the SMART way to spend your pregnancy?

Please correct me if I'm wrong...

I guess it would depend on how good a skater you are.

My understanding is that many doctors are now advising pregnant patients to continue their normal activities, with minor exceptions, through the second trimester, unless otherwise indicated.

Well, I can hardly even stand up on ice skates, so I sure wouldn't try ice skating pregnant! My DD ice skates, though, and the only time (knock on wood) she falls is when she's practicing a new move like a spin or a lunge. So, maybe if I were a seasoned ice skater, I might get out on the ice pregnant; I would just stick to gliding around, though, I wouldn't try out any fancy moves. And I wouldn't go out on a crowded rink and chance being knocked down.

If I was an experienced skater then I might get on the ice to just glide around a little but I would be extra careful what I did. As it is I am a terrible skater and I would barely feel safe driving by an ice rink while pregnant! ;)

Gee when I was pregnant, I wouldn't have even been able to lace up my own skates!!! Hopefully Tom helped Katie along...but personally, I would never have taken the risk. I fell down the stairs when I was pregnant with my son due to my balance being off. So I wouldn't have gone anywhere NEAR an ice rink. JMHO.

There is far more danger to pregnancy from becoming inactive than from maintaining your normal level of activity for as long as you can. I believe it is that dichotomy that has doctors recommending the latter so strongly.

IMO there are other ways of maintaining activity that don't require you being on ICE.

I suppose the importance of being on ice depends on the person. I'm a guy, won't ever get pregnant, and I should NEVER be on ice. While there are other folks who skate better than they walk.

No way! I fell on my rump going down some stairs when I was six months pregnant and had contractions for two days afterwards. Can't imagine what falling on hard ice would have done to me!

oo...sorry...missed that thread.

Just so you know, I didn't post it with "thread police" intentions, just thought you might want to check out the responses on that thread as well. :)

Actually they say the baby is so well protected in there that even if you fell face first on your belly, not much would happen to baby.

But I can't imagine having the balance to skate while (what is she?) 6-7 months pregnant.

I did have this observation though: her smile seems genuine...not an "oh, look honey, smile for the camera".

Still think he's crazy, but if she likes crazy, then more power to her! :)

She's dazzled by him.

I really, really hope he doesn't break her heart...

(she'll always be "joey" to me. heheh)

Well - I am seven months pregnant and there is no way you would get me on the ice and I am pretty decent.

Here is a quote from a pregnancy website re. ice skating while pregnant:
Ice skating is more dangerous than snow skiing because falls on hard ice can cause more serious trauma. Skating should definitely not be engaged in by inexperienced skaters and should be pursued only with extreme caution by those with experience.

There's also a chance that other skaters can slam into her, especially those inexperienced folks. Unless, of course, Tom rents out the whole rink for a photo op.

I was only 2 months pregnant last time we were in Denver visiting family and I didn't take the chance.... not worth it!
