Last night I started breaking out all over in red splotches with raised areas. I went to the Dr. today and he confirmed it's hives. He gave me a Cortisone shot, a prescription for Zyrtec and told me to take Benadryl. He also recommended an oatmeal bath.

About 7 hours later, the areas that were broken out when I went to the Dr. look better, but now I have new hives popping out everywhere! I'm dying over here!

Is this normal? Someone please tell me they'll go away soon!

I'm so sorry. I know how awful it is. I gotta tell you though, it could leave soon, or not. My very worse case lasted 2 weeks of horrendous welts. Hopefully your's won't be nearly as bad. Take showers in barely warm water, heat will make it itch more and cold water just makes it hurt. Use very gentle soaps, rinse your clothes twice. Don't wear anything tight or that rubs or scratches. Be careful of anything new and what you eat. Your skin is already aggravated, it won't take much to irritate it more.

Hang in there, it will get better.

Hi there! I had hives for 3 weeks once and boy, do I feel sorry for you! The other poster is right, take the coolest shower you can because heat will make them worse. My ankles and feet got quite swollen and I couldn't wear shoes, so try to keep your feet up. Keep putting on your cream and watch your breathing to be sure your airway is not getting swollen. I got mine from Tide when they switched formulas. I will be thinking of you and hoping for a very fast recovery!!

Poor Dawn! Shawn gets them from this strawberry cake he loves. Great big welty fluidy red hives. Did you eat anything unusual?

So not what I wanted to hear :(

I've had this happen once before. Strangely enough, it was almost exactly one year ago. Those lasted on and off for about a week. I was newly pregnant and they thought I had a reaction to an antibiotic.

Not sure what caused this breakout. I have hypothyroidism and he said that could be the cause, though you usually never know what's causing them. They're just so uncomfortable! I just took more Benadryl and I'm going to soak in Aveeno.

Thanks for the info. I hope yours never come back!

I haven't eaten anything that I haven't eaten many times before. I haven't switched detergents, soaps, deodorants, etc.

The only thing out of the "ordinary" I ate were pretzel treats. A pretzel, Hershey Hug and an M&M. I've eaten them before, though. :confused3

As mentioned it could be acute or chronic. Hives - urticaria are someting most of us will deal with at one time or other. Usually harmless. Finding the cause can be like finding a needle in a haystack. Foods, medicines, detergents, danders, pollens sometimes even physical factors like heat, cold and sunlight, and the list goes on.

Take your antihistimines (benadryl, zyrtec), they block the symptom-producing release of histamine only when you take them. Once the antihistimine leaves the body the reaction continues like a vicious cycle. If you find that the benadryl isnt working there are other meds your doctor can prescribe.

If they dont resolve prednisone is an option. Hope you can get some relief itching from hives is the worst!:grouphug:

I got them once when I was little. My Grandpa worked for the Granny Goose candy factory and took us on a tour. We went into this big room that had cement mixers, but they were full of sweet tarts and jawbreakers being formed. I guess I inhaled a bunch of the powder or something. The next day I was covered in hives! It was so long ago I don't remember what we did to relieve them. It did last about a week though.

How about stress? My 10yodd gets them when she gets the nerves before something big.

She will only get about 10 of them and I never give her anything and they go away on their own.
Stressing about them will make them worse.

I had hives in a very severe way. I was rushed to the hospital with a police escort. As soon as the ER saw me walk in, they took me immediately! They shot me in the arm with a steroid and benadryl. Let me tell you, the fumes from the benadryl were escaping from my mouth! It felt like I had a whole bottle of wine after those shots! (not a bad feeling at all;) )

As for what caused the hives, I was on antibiotics and then my child gave me a piece of gum (purple), all of a sudden, my ears started to itch and from there on it was chaos!!!

I am also hypothyroid, and never heard of getting hives from that. I have to take medicine every day for it.

Good luck. I hope all goes well for you.:thumbsup2

How scary!

He said Hashimoto's Disease could cause the hives. When I googled hives, one of the causes was certain types of thyroid diseases.

Stress is a possibility, though the majority of my stress was about 4 months ago.
