Driving home from Oshawa last night a deer ran right out in front of us. We were not going very fast but there was no way around it. Poor thing hit the ground hard but when we went back to check it was gone. After looking for him a few minutes we seen him get back up and run right back across the road

After realizing the it was ok I checked out my van :earseek:

Both front grills are broken and a huge dent in the middle of my hood. Can't get the hood open now. We are taking it in to see how much damage is done but we are also heading to Disney on Friday so repairs are just going to have to wait.

We really need a happy place right now.

OMG - I Hope you guys are OK? :scared1:

Did you manage to drive home or did you have to get a tow?

I have heard that hitting a deer can ruin your vehicle

I'm amazed that the deer got up and run away :confused3

Hoping the insurance company will come through for you to do the repairs?

Sending Pixie Dust and best wishes you way

Have a wonderful trip to Disney :flower3:

We were lucky. Everyone in our van was fine and the deer was fine(not sure how though).

The van is another story. Nothing that can't be fixed but still no small scrape. I have heard other stories that did not end as well as ours so I am grateful that it was just our van.

Glad all our safe.
Hope you can get your van fixed without much financial damage.
:wizard:

Have a great trip.

So sorry to hear about the van. But glad you guys are ok.

There are things you can put on a vehicle (DH has them on his motorcycle). I don't know what they are but they send out some sort of sound (I think) that only deers can hear that keep them away from the vehicle/motorcycle.

I think he got them at Canadian tire.

Have a wonderful vacation.

Hi There.

Glad To Hear You Guys Are Alright. Did You Report Your Collision Yet ? A Scratch These Days Is Usually Over $ 1000.00 Dollars, So I Would Imagine This To Be The Case. Reporting It Right Away Will Put A Jump On Getting The Vehicle Fixed. Insurance Won't Take Care Of The Damage Without A Police Report.

Alot Of People Put Off The Report Until They Are Told This By Their Insuance Company Only To Frustrate You By A 1 Or 2 Day Delay.

Glad to hear that you are all okay. Vans can be fixed, people, not always. I'm certain that you will enjoy the trip and the 'away from it all' vacation next week. You'd think that those deer would just cross at the deer crossing signs. :p

10 years ago, we hit a deer. I will never forget it. I always used to cry when we saw a dead animal at the side of the road (I live in a rural area) and when we hit the deer, you can only imagine, I was completely hysterical. It had to hit on my side of the truck - right in front of me. I can still see it hitting the car. It died on impact - we were travelling around 90k. The truck was still drivable, but the damage was extensive. We drove into the city and called Fish and Wildlife and reported the accident to the police right away. Fish and Wildlife followed my BF out to the impact site and they took the deer to a shelter for food - since the hit was still really fresh.

The damage was almost as much as the truck was worth, but it still got fixed, and very quickly too. We had a "new truck" within 2 weeks. The images are still there though.

I am really happy that everyone is ok. There are terrible stories about how some people don't fare so well with wildlife - hear them all the time in Alberta.

We were glad to hear you all are doing OK...or as best as can be based on the situation...as posted earlier, make sure the incident is reported before you leave.........and then get back to being excited about your upcoming trip :goodvibes

I know exactly what you are going through. We were hit by a deer Christmas Eve about 8 years ago in our van. I say hit by the deer because like you it jumped right out in front of us. It actually jumped out of the ditch at the side of the road and in front of our van. Major damage to the van ($50 off of writing it off!!) and because it hit the passenger side major damage to me too :guilty: I ended up in physiotherapy for over a year with knee, back, shoulder and neck injuries. I still suffer from them, but arthritis makes them worse!! Unfortunately, the deer made out much worse and didn't make it and was killed instantly. It was a terrible way to start out our Christmas. One minute we were singing Christmas carols on the way to the in-laws and then the next we were in a ditch on the opposite side of the road wondering what exactly happened.

Some advice I can give you and that is make sure you are checked out by a doctor within 24 hours of the accident. Sometimes you feel okay right away, but symptoms don't appear immediately and for your insurance you have to have a medical exam on file. As others have said, try and have the vehicle repaired prior to going on vacation as some damage could be made worse by driving longer. Your insurance policy may cover a rental car maybe? I'm glad that all of you are doing okay so far, even the deer!! Keep us posted how things go!

Bad luck really sucks anytime but is worse when you are just days away from your vacation! We know how you feel with all the problems we had with our roof leaking both before and during our trip. When we got back our washer had decided to stop working and the roof was leaking in new spots. When you plan a great trip the last thing you plan for is these unexpected expenses.

We are just glad to hear that everyone is okay and the only damage was to your van. We hope you guys have a fantastic trip and we can't wait to see pics and to hear ALL about MVMCP!!! :teeth:

:grouphug: Glad that you're all OK. The things Suzy was talking about are called Deer whistles. Get everything checked out and paperwork filed before you go ... hey, you'll be so busy that Friday will be here in no time ;) Go and have a fabulous trip!

Wow, after hearing some other stories I don't feel so bad. I never realzied just how much damage a deer could do.

Lezah- so glad to hear that you are doing better now.

Snow white family- a leaky roof and no washer-OUCH- that would be costly after a trip.

Thanks for the well wishes on our upcoming trip everyone.

So glad you guys are all OK! It can be so dangerous. We hit a deer several years ago and totalled the car. The deer jumped up and kept going so we thought he had survived. We called Natural Resources anyway and told them the location. They found the deer very close to our accident site. He must have just jumped into the woods and collapsed. We weren't injured but we were sore and bruised from the seatbelts. It was a nasty experience. At least you get to go on your trip and put things into perspective. It's only money!! You are all OK and get to go on a fabulous vacation! Have fun!! :)

Yikes!

Glad everyone is ok! Vehicles are replaceable but people aren't!!

Doesn't this stuff always seem to happen right around a trip?? Our trip last year the brakes on our van kept giving out and they couldn't find anything wrong with them.... dh decided after following me and seeing it happen that the van was going to be replaced!! 1 week later we had a new van!

glad everyone is ok!

Glad everyone is ok:)

Have a great time on your trip - drive safe!!

Glad to hear that no one was seriously injured.

I just wanted to say that most insurance companies will class this as a "not at fault" accident and it will not affect your premiums. The insurance companies realize that there's little you can do when an animal jumps out in front of you.

Hope you have a great trip to Disney!
